Very interesting. I never knew that existed back then. I worked out at Alvin Roy's from ,68 to 70 and saw a few Chargers come through and work out during the off season. I didn't know what steroids were back then but one offensive lineman(won't mention a name) sure could toss some heavy weights.

Correction. We lost the next week at Tenn. we beat OM 14-0 in '58 and won the NC. Heisman was '59 as was the punt return.

Fact is the league was all white back then so someones achievements shouldn't be put down due to rules that are not in their control. It's not his fault there were no black players. Very stupid argument you just made...

I'm so sick of hearing about Cannon as if he was the best of all time. I'm sure he was great during his era but I think it's a nostalgic greatness people remember more than anything. I don't care if anyone else shares my opinion. Keep down voting away.

Dr Cannon was my orthodontist. His hands were huge to be going in someone's mouth. Haha. Really nice guy.

I have known Dr Billy Cannon my entire life as my Father played on the 58 team with him. Personally the guy is a super nice guy and will always go out of his way to speak to me when we run into each other. And not just me, just about anyone that approaches him. He learned from his mistakes and has done some good things in his life.
My favorite story is one day my Dad and I were headed up to Arkansas to pick up some hay for our horses. Both Billy and my dad were also into horse racing. Anyway we stopped by the Fed Prison in Arkansas to bring Billy to lunch. It was prearranged with the prison. We parked out front and here comes Billy without any escort to our truck. We went to lunch for an hour and went back and dropped him off. He walked back to the front doors of the prison and was let in. He was a rock star there and is still one almost everywhere he goes.
Now as far as his high school and college days I am sure everything in the book is true as my dad said he was a wild man. There were some stories I cant tell on here. But my dad said the guy was a freak athlete and was not only the fastest guy on the team but also one of the biggest.
Anyway just wanted to tell my Cannon story. To this day when I run into him when back in Baton Rouge he always makes time for a short conversation.

It was before my time, but when a guy is a standout on offense, defense and special teams, he is going to be remembered as one of the best. In the Sugar Bowl during the undefeated national championship year, he threw for the only score in the game and kicked the extra point too. He was also punter at LSU. Which of today's guys do all of that?

He ran the 100 yard dash in 9.4 in college, how does that compare to the 100 meters? I dont feel like googling it at this time. But curious how that compares as Donte ran the 100M I believe in 10.3 in high school. So when comparing speed from a guy in the 50's to now Cannons time seems pretty impressive. Plus he threw the shot put 54 feet also

I met Dr. Cannon at an alumni event here in Houston. Strongest hands I have ever shook. Dude is still strong as an ox. An absolute gentlemen too.

I'm looking forward to reading the book. Can't tell who the bigger a-hole is in this thread. The guy who doesn't respect Cannon because he didn't play against black guys (like he had a choice in the days of segregation) or the guy who thought he was Sherlock Holmes thinking he figured out the author of the book a full page after the OP admitted the author was his dad.

Yep, he was in training when he had his hands in my mouth. I was impressed that he was on the Chiefs for a year, disliked that he played for the Raiders. His LSU years didn't impress me, we'd just moved to Baton Rouge and the Big 8 was the only real college ball.
