VERY CLASSLESS POST....WOULD YOU EVER HAVE THE COURAGE TO SAY THAT JIM HAWTHORNE'S FACE??? I DOUBT IT. JIM HAWTHORNE IS A GREAT ANNOUNCER AND CLASSY INDIVIDUAL WHO ALWAYS HAS TIME FOR THE AVERAGE FAN AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN NICE TO ME IN PERSON. IT IS TOO BAD YOU HAVE TO DENIGRATE A DECENT PERSON WITH A GUTLESS POST. I AM SURE YOU WOULD BE ELOQUENT BEHNID THE MIKE....NOT!! YOU WOULD LIKELY FALL APART.

Off the cuff can you name the entire 1982 starting ? One of the best in LSU history or the fullback on that team?

No. But I never boasted that I could. Chad Loup and-yes,14 are correct. Google's fun that way. What a superfan you are.

I will miss Hawthorn....he has been the voice I have listened for since the days of trying to tune in the AM station. It is live radio, for the overwhelming majority of calls he is dead on.

If LSU sucked that day/night, he wasn't shy about saying it.

He over did this. There were times he should just simply keep his mouth closed and make no comment at all. He harped on the negative way too much and made listening to less-than-good games somewhat unbearable.

You don't find that with some other announcers.

As you should find. Nobody wants to hear too much doom-and-gloom. Jim reveled in this.

You people around here never cease to amuse me.
Some of you bitch because he is too much of a "homer", some of you bitch because he is too hard on LSU and the rest bitch just to bitch because you think it makes you sound like you know something.

Yep, going to miss Jim. Even with his goofy remarks & mistakes, he's been the voice of the Tigers.

uhmm...I listened quite a bit on the radio and he would leave you in the dark, bemoan, and get it wrong initially quite often. But he definitely was the voice of the Tigers

Uggh Nix genius I gave you my answer and it was wrong of course guessing Hodson who I knew had at least 12 straight completions was a terrible guess. I then after u told me it was incorrect because I had an inkling you were talking out your arse with 13 looked up the answer.

I didn't say I could answer any trivia question you could look up but that I could kick your arse in LSU trivia while obviously not that hard.

I have always liked Hawthorne. He is a great Tiger and and extremely classy individual. Before anyone is critical of him calling games, listen to the announcers for other teams and try calling a game yourself. It is more difficult than you could ever imagine.

That being said, he should never have called baseball games. He just doesn't seem to understand baseball lingo and you really have no idea what is going on in the game when listening to him on the radio.

please let them get a quality play by play guy for the first time since John Ferguson

uh, what???

I grew up listening to John Ferguson every Saturday night. Before the days of cable TV, LSU football was only on radio.

Ferguson had a unique voice, but he was NOT a good play-by-play man. Way too slow in giving the results of a play. So many times, I heard the roar of the crowd several seconds before he announced what occurred. Very frustrating as a listener.

A good PBP guy gives very quick pertinent details of the play as it occurs, and then lets the color guy do the analysis. Ferguson was just too slow for my liking.

That being said, I grew up listening to him, so he still has a place in my heart. I just don't think he was technically very good.

Your reception was a hell of a lot better than mine.

One of the things that Ferguson had a habit of doing was the loooong pause.
" The ball is the air............it's ............
in.............(What John!! For God's sake WHAT???)
complete.
He was a master of the dramatic pause, intentional or not. Radio men of that era had to paint a picture. John's just took a bit longer to develop. He was a living classic.

I searched for some audio clips of John's PBP and all I could find was a 6 minute clip of one of our games against Notre Dame. Sounded like normal PBP to me. No extended pauses.

No shite.

The majority of things I hear these kids crying about JH I make an attempt to listen for,, I never hear it.
I guess without a picture it's difficult for some of the people to keep up.
