How could Alleva let this happen?

This is madness...

Our only other choice was to let him leave and go to R-Kansas.

He wasn't going to Arkansas.

That entire Arkansas situation was ridiculous.

I asked this the other day in its simplest form and learned that I was stupid as far as contracts go. Apparently the kicker is that this is the only way you can get an ELITE coach to sign. I just forgot that we had an ELITE coach, so that part of the equation got cleared up for me.

Oh boy. THIS again

What else are you going to do? Complain for the next year?

I think most here felt it was time for a change, but hoping for the best with Miles is a reasonable approach to the situation.

The same points about the offense and how he can't beat Bama can only be rehashed so much.

The problem was Joe Lombardi the former LSU president. He is the one who signed Miles after 07 championship to the ridiculous rollover contract where for each 8 win season the contract rolls over adding a year. A never ending contract. A public employee cannot have longer than 7 year contract. Miles was $3.1 M. Buyout was $18.6M. In 2010 after cotton bowl the Michigan flirtation again miles redid contract that got him $500k raise but removed rollovers. To negotiate removal of rollovers they had to put in the current buyout. Miles had negotiated power due to ridiculous contract given by Lombardi. Bigger part of that deal is miles negotiated bigger assistant $ pool. Then in 12 after ark miles got 2 additional years add(the two years back from 11 and 12 seasons) pulse $500 raise which is now $4.1

Thank you and good night

I think you are correct in that it happened in the 07' negotiations. Skip and Pres at the time put the buyout as the complete amount of the contract if terminated. And I think a rollover each year was included if they approved it. Seems like I remember that bringing the buyout every year to 18.75 million. So when the Ark deal came around, Alleva extended it but put in the reduced buyout amount each year so eventually it would be single digits by the last year of the contract. So prior to 2010 the buyout was actually larger each year than it is now. Or that is how I remember it. Maybe someone can correct me if that was not the case.

It was a 22 million dollar contract, and having a 15.1 million buyout over 8 years isn't that much for a brand new contract that was just signed. The problem comes in that alleva, in his wisdom, kept rolling the contract forward so in essence, every year was like the first, instead of allowing him to go into his 2nd, 3rd, 4th year, etc, where the buyouts became less.

When Les received the extension after 2012, the program had gone 34-6 over a three year period. He has not received and extension since.

The buyout clause was established in that contract, and has not changed since. This is not the product of some roll-over the last three years.

quote:

That buyout would be $15 million if Miles is terminated prior to Dec. 31, 2015. It would then drop to $12.9 million for the contract's fourth and fifth years, to $8.6 million for the sixth year and $4.3 million for the seventh.

Because Miles waited until 4 weeks before signing day to threaten to leave for Arkansas leaving LSU with no replacement.

Did Miles demand this after Arkansas showed interest?

Why is it so massive?

It equates to the total compensation owed to Miles through the life of the contract. It's not a bonus...it's simply a guaranteed contract. Professional athletes do this all the time -- why shouldn't a coach do everything he can to secure his own future?
