Other than the "written vs unwritten" nature of what feeds the entitlement, Not really much difference between your attitude on that day and the OP's today.

I am not certain what qualifies as being "wrong" in this matter and what is implied by unwritten rules.
Had I attempted to park in that one spot and been approached respectfully by this group I would have moved to another spot if there were multiple available. However, as the available spots began to diminish the audacity of these individuals increased. When there is no reserved parking system in place no one should ever be entitled to any spot.
