I guess it happens at the end of the game because that is when they stop talking and actually start commenting on the game itself.

i like hershiser's knowledge of the game. lots of insider anecdotes. and it doesn't bother me that he talks about when he played like joe morgan does. i enjoy hearing that. gives the game continuity.

i'm impressed with how much robin ventura knows about pitchers. you expect him to know alot about hitting.

Orel had two really good moments during the game: (1) Talking about coleman pitching from the stretch. It was a good pickup by him and you could tell last night Coleman was much better from the stretch last night.
(2) Right before Mikie's game winner he said there's no way that he should throw anything other than a fastball. dude threw a curve ball and bam - basehit. Big mistake by UT on pitch selection.

One of the funniest things I remeber about him was they zoomed in on Lasorta one time with Orel in the backgroung, during a playoff game I think, and Orel was mocking/imitating T.L. behind his back, funny as shite. Then Lasorta turns and looks over his shoulder and Orel was straight. T.L. faces the camera again and O.H. starts walking around with his gut sticking out again.

I thought this was so true. I think a high fastball was the pitch.

What was orel talking about when the 2nd baseman and SS got tied up on the mahtook single. Something about "open mouth" if it was one thing and "closed mouth" from the 2nd baseman or something like that????

I think they are doing a pretty good job overall. They seem to be into the game and enjoying it. That may sound like a no brainer, but too often, some of the ex-pro guys (Reynolds) have treated the College World Series like a little league match-up.

Orel has been especially good. I'm a casual dan of baseball, and his expert perspective and "coaching details" have been great as far as I'm concerned. It seems to me that he has found a way to introduce a professional baseball perspective while simultaneously respecting and enjoying the college game.

I have not heard this crew once speak condescendingly about the aluminum bats.

Yep. Ventura and Orel were also excellent in explaining Coleman's problems with the outside part of the plate to hitters which was right on.

They said hitters have not seen him throw a fastball to the outside part of the plate.....so they know if it leaves his hand a fastball it's coming over the inside part of the plate and they are teeing off on it. That was exactly correct.

We need Harold Reynolds. He is by far the best commentator that the CWS has had.

I think the crew does a decent job... no major complaints. Well, one...

I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but did anyone notice that Mike Patrick told his old "2nd Place Trophy" story last night but he changed the team/coach involved...

2008: I heard a great story... "when the Miami coach got the job, he noticed that the CWS Runner-Up Trophy was being used to prop-open the men's bathroom door in Coral Gables"

2009: I heard a great story... "when the texass coach got the job, he noticed that the CWS Runner-Up Trophy was being used to prop-open the men's bathroom door in austin"

am I correct here? did anyone else catch that?

ESPN broadcasts the College World Series.
ESPN fired Harold Reynolds.
Harold Renolds works for the MLB Network.

You'd just as soon ask for John Madden to do LSU football games.

when there is a runner on first, the ss and 2nd baseman communicate who is going to cover second in the event of a hit. the way they communicate is to signal using an open mouth or closed mouth. open means "you cover". closed means "i cover". they hide their signal with the glove so that the opponent can't see the signal

Surprised no one mentioned that yet.

I loved the Hershiser line about the hair gel helping increase the grip on the ball. When Ventura said something about using foreign substances on the ball, Orel said it was not foreign he only used American made products!

I agree. Except for MP getting some of the players' names wrong, they've done well.

Orel is the best of the bunch. The knowledge he brings to the booth is great...not only about pitching, but also with hitting. He has pointed out several things and about the players' swings and stances that make lots of sense.

Orel wasn't a bad hitter in his day as a major leaguer either. I would venture to say that he's one of the only pitchers if not th only one who batted 1.000 in the MLWS. He went 3 for 3 in the '88 series against the A's with 1 run and an RBI. Not to mention how he shut the A's down at the plate.
