But who gives a damn how he wanted it back when he played? This is top-notch Division I baseball.

First, let me say that I have probably listened to Hawthorne (and John Ferguson)

FWIW, Hawthorne couldn't hold Ferguson's jock-strap.

Hawthorne only got the job as a result of a government cover up and conspiracy.....

The first was on the ground ball to Blake Dean that was called foul. Hawthorne kept saying that "it was fair because Blake Dean was standing in fair territory when he caught the ball." Everyone with any baseball knowledge of the rules knows that it is the location of the ball (not the fielder) at the time the ball is touched that determines whether the ball is foul or fair.

this was ignorant on hawthorne's part

quote:

The second occurred when Hawthorne was critical of the Georgia pitcher when he was not pitching from the stretch with the bases loaded. Hawthorne said that most pitchers pitch from the stretch. Really?

yes. really. most pitchers in college/pros do, in fact, pitch from the stretch when the bases are loaded. there are only a few that don't.

quote:

The last one involved whether a right handed batter would prefer to face a right-handed or left-handed pitcher. Hawthorne inserted that "when I played baseball as a right handed batter, I always wanted to face a right handed pitcher because we rarely saw left handed pitching." Really?

truth be known, as a kid that is playing youth ball/high school baseball, they are more comfortable seeing right handers if they are right handed batters. in fact, it wasn't until i played college baseball that i was begging for a lefty as a right handed hitter myself.

Jim Hawthorne and Broadcaster should never be used in the same sentence, however, Jim Hawthorne and Clueless go well together.

Listening to Hawthorne do baseball play by play is like listening to nails going across a chalkboard. How do you not know about a third out being recorded before the UGA run scoring.....and then arguing with Hanagriff about it when you have no idea??

I was listening at the game. When the runner crossed the plate, the home plate umpire made a signal that looked like a combination of waving off the run and the safe signal. Both Hanagriff and Hawthorne thought the run had made it in time, simply due to a questionable hand signal by the ump.

Hawthorne kept arguing with Hanagriff and sounded like a Little League Dad with absolutely no knowledge of the rules of baseball. If Hawthorne’s statement was correct, then a fielder could jump into fair territory to field a bunt that was rolling in foul territory to make the ball fair.

This was brutal to listen to. He simply wouldnt listen to hanagriff's logic. made him sound even worse.

I have a great game to play. Every time Hawthorne tells you the score take a shot of your favorite alcohol or glass of soda for you kids. My guess is that you will not even get a buzz for the adults or the kids will not get a sugar high. This is the main reason I listen to the OPPOSING annoucer for any sport that Sirius/XM put on or try to look at the OPPONENT'S internet site since LSU's is a little weak. HAWTHORNE has to go even if he is an associate AD at LSU or has tenure at LSU.
It is a shame that LSU has this representing them on the radio. He is as negative as the email that I writing is critical.

Turn in your application to Alleva immediately. I mean, with your perfect knowledge of baseball; they'd be no one better for LSU than you.

This topic seems to come up every other week.

There is no way to please everyone. Hawthorne is popular enough so that he won't be replaced until he is ready to retire. He's better than most others I've heard at other SEC schools anyway.

To MTA540, thanks, I have actually considered it (sarcasm noted). I don't have the radio voice, but I certainly have the knowledge (especially when compared to Hawthorne). Don't know if I would give up my law career, but it would be fun to try.

By the way, for those saying when they batted that they preferred a righty on righty matchup, you are missing the point or maybe my argument was not clear. Hawthorne was mocking the Georgia coach for making pitching changes based upon which batter (left or right handed) was batting. My point is that most COACHES (College or Pro) would prefer to have a righty on righty and a lefty on lefty matchup and I was not speaking of the batter's prospective, although Hawthorne used that statement to support his position on the subject.

Also, to LATIGERS, I wanted to post that comment regarding the error on Didier, but until I reviewed the TV broadcast, I was not certain it was an error. Upon further review, Didier should have made the play, although the ball was hit hard right at him. I think Hanagriff was being more reasonable in his assessment of the play for the radio audience.

Ford should not be allowed anywhere around LSU broadcasts. HE IS HORRIBLE. Has absolutely no in depth knowledge of Footbal and Basketball, just reads stat sheets and score updates. Heard him interview one of the coaches before gametime - was totally embarrased for the coach having to deal with that douche.

100% to this.

I've been railing against Ford ever since he's been on the air. Sounds like some inexperienced, bumbling and stumbling high school kid. Shouldn't be anywhere near a microphone when LSU is playing any sport. The simple fact that he's been on so many years speaks volumes for the LSUAD. Apparently neither Bertman or Alleva have ever actually listened to any portion of the broadcasts to hear just exactly what they have representing LSU on the air. If they did and had any pride at all, there would be changes.....

Leave Rollins, etc. on TV.

Ford/Hultberg would never work on basketball. You need a true play-by-play guy. I think Patrick Wright gets a shot at that eventually...been doing women's games forever and is pretty good.

Maybe a little shuffling might help LSU. Say that we replace Jim with Van Chancellor. Say we make Jim A.D. Damn! I don't know who does play-by-play at the women's games. Oh well.

Too many apologists for LSU on all forms of matters..

40M New West Uppers with exposed piping, wires inside TS, chainlink fencing running redundantly along East Upper at old stadium inside, cracked tiles at elevators, etc..

New Box, though beautiful from the exterior, and parts of the interior, has tacky metal bleachers in outfield, no trees/woodline to hide some of Ponderosa yellow tin monstrosity in backdrop(re:Okla and Ole Miss and Pepperdine's outfield views), spearmint green walls instead of MLB hunter green(re:USCe by Ray Tanner's hands), littered with ads, too much generic aluminum handrailing in grandstand, green chairbacks mixed in amongst purple and gold chairbacks(choose either PnG or all green..but not all three together), etc..

Hawthorne doing all three mens majors, when he's too old, never was good enough at peak to handle all three at one time, and needs spotters to see, etc..

Too many good baseball guys and/or announcers in town, like Rantz, McDonald, Rollins, and many other LSU ex-players residing here that would swim a river of poop to have the job, to have JH doing play-by-play half-@ss..

If I'm LSU powers-that-be, I let JH choose Football or Basketball, keeping just one, and give Baseball, and the other unchosen, to someone else. Less workload for JH..probably improved product by JH.

Hanagriff should be in the LSU Football booth, in any combination, and does a solid job at Bases too.
