I think we got as high as #2 in '81 but that's it, though. I could be wrong and I don't feel like digging into it right now.
ETA I did look it up and we were ranked #2 in the February 24, 1981 AP Poll.
Here is one for the "way-back" machine...
Polls aren't such a big deal these days, but back then it kinda was. I tracked that team the whole year as they went on the long winning streak in the middle of the year and as a 10 year old, they were the first team sports team that I followed. I still remembering listening to WFMF on Monday's around 6pm when the DJ would get the new AP poll and announce where LSU had moved up to. The anticipation was always great. I miss those days.

Wasn't Arizona ranked #1 once when LSU played them?
Yes in December of 2002 and John Brady spanked dat arse.

I think the '81 team was the #1 overall seed in the whole tournament, though I'm not sure how to verify that. They did have the best record in the nation, and were the best team going into the Final Four, but we all know what happened after that.

we quickly stumbled by losing the 2nd game of the season to (I believe) an unranked Kansas team.
As I remember, it turned out Kansas was very good that year. They wound up being a #2 seed.
