What are they like?

For some reason, I imagine that they are relatively snobbish and pretentious. I have a sinking feeling that much of the good natured ribbing in Atlanta will inexorably lead to irrelevant allusions concerning (a) Dean Smith/basketball; or (b) UNC's academic reputation.

I have been anticipating that the UNC faithful will resemble Duke, Wake, and other Tobacco Road fans. I'm glad to hear that isn't the case.

Yeah many since I joined an ACC website a few months ago to talk football with a few. They are like LSU fans in a sense they believe they have potential for a great defense and if the offense improves it could be a special season. They are hoping Yates turns it on because he has the talent but some reason he seems to have a mental block during games.
Not as passionate as the LSU fan base but they are loyal and these past few seasons are first time they have had real hope since Mack was coaching.

its a lot like Bama fans, only you have the snotty part about the academics thrown in. The NC State game is all they care about in football. Its like Aubie/Bama.

plus, they graduate with no debt, because the school has so much money, if you can get in, you dont pay a cent.

You know how Bama has a bunch of sidewalk alumni...so does UNC...a lot of the fans that didn't go to UNC are pretty trashy from my experiences

We have no room to talk either. LSU has tons of sidewalk alumni as well.

I lived in Carolina for 11yrs and I know a ton of tar heel fans. snobbish and pretentious are the last words I would think of as a discription. tarheel fans are much like LSU fans...except not as edgey. you tigerbait them and they will probably laugh in your face. hoops has always ruled in Chapel Hill but football is on the rise.

Their football program is definitely on the rise with Butch Davis. However, it will always be a basketball school first and foremost. They have also done quite well in baseball as of late. Their football stadium is still pretty small.

I do think that UNC fans' "not wanting to be like those Duke fans" might temper down this angle quite a bit. People often measure themselves relative to what's right next to them, and my hunch tells me that UNC fans see themselves as more friendly "regular Joe" types than those bastards 8 miles down the road in Durham.

I am a UNC alum. Only go to football games. Have not missed one in 10 years. Been in the Dean Dome 1 time total.

I will be in Atlanta and look for a good game. Under Butch Davis, we have had very few games that were not tight games. It's the Saban like style of play.

1. Every team has arrogant fans. UNC and LSU are no exceptions.
2. As a parent of a UNC student, there is no free ride. If so, I'm pissed.
3. UNC does have a very large endowment and the largest athletic endowment in the US.
4. UNC is not a large school, 18,000 undergrad. Is the nations oldest public university. Also does have a lot of fans statewide that are not alum.
5. It's current football stadium expansion is with totally private funds.
6. UNC football as a disease would be bi-polar. Sometimes very good, with periods of really bad. Hey, we're happy now.
7. Hard to talk trash in BB. We have been humbled too many times. LSU knows well what a bullseye feels like.
8. I believe first games are hard to predict and any result can be turned around by either team.
9. I'll be disappointed if we lose, but the beer will still be cold.

Definitely not small either, unless you're going by Big Ten standards.

We had some good match-ups in 1948 & 1949.

We were also in the same conference from 1922 to 1932, but never played each other.
