Well with JR it was his freshman year.

Harris has a live arm. He hasn't learned to take something off his throws. That's why he keeps throwing the ball so high.

When he gets more control of his velocity, he is going to light the world on fire.

That's one of the hardest things for QB's with big arms to learn.

keep in mind that JaMarcus redshirted, just like most other QBs including Mariota, Winston, Manziel and others. Harris was thrown to the wolves a little bit, the fact that hes where he is now is a great tribute to him and Cam.

I don't think the problem is with taking something off his throws. The problem is with identifying the right target quickly enough. Pretend for a moment that the diagram below are three points on a receivers route:

A-----B-----C

If the QB decides at Point B that the receiver is the proper target, then the QB must get the ball to Point C quicker than if the QB makes the decision when the receiver is at Point A. Making the decision late (at Point B rather than Point A), causes two unfortunate consequences: (1) the QB must put more zip on the ball to get the ball to Point C in time, and (2) the QB's attempt to hurry-up tends to cause the QB to release the ball early which results in passes going high.

With practice and reps, recognition comes earlier. The QB won't have to hurry the pass, can throw with lower velocity, and won't tend to release early.

Harris is just a true sophomore. He's only had three starts, all against SEC west opponents. His recognition and decision speed will improve.

Can't just enjoy a win without being negative?

My post was not negative. I am completely optimistic about Harris.

Well, I wouldn't say that pointing out areas in which a young player can improve is necessarily being negative. I don't think anyone could argue that Harris is not playing well, and the OP did NOT say or imply that. I'm sure that both Harris and the coaches are aware that his game is still a work in progress, however, and that there is much room for improvement. The OP did conclude with a very positive statement about Harris.

That's exactly what I am seeing. Especially on that pass to a wide open Dural I believe, in the endzone.

Yeah it's not a lot, just he's slow on some of his throws, and sails a few passes. That stuff will get taken care of with more repetitions and he should get a nice bit of it over the next 5 weeks.

If you look at the RB screen he tried to throw yesterday, you can see that he hasn't learn to take something off of the throw. Rohan didn't learn it until his senior year. When he learned it, the offense took off. Hopefully Harris can learn it soon.

He's got 4 games to get some quality reps. Should be a fun first half of the season

Yep, They are celebrated their entire life for chucking the shite out of the ball. Now that the hands are strong enough to catch the really fast ball, the coach is going to tell him to take a bit off?

Doesn't make sense to a young QB's body. His brain will agree with coach, but his body is trained otherwise for many years.

He'll get it though.

That's not why passes sail high.

I don't think anyone is really being negative either; but all we wanted this offseason was average play from our QB, right? So many threads about if only Harris will not beat us like Jennings did last year. Etc.

Well, I think we've learned we the past few weeks that are prayers were answered.

Let's move on from the QB position.

he's thrown for what? 150 yards?

he got a first year without real expectations, like winston, mariota, JR, etc. he doesn't look anything like them after the first 2 games of the 2nd year of each

I agree with the poster(s) that said these are more about reads than mustard/touch.

Will say this... I think this is the way to get him to where they want to be. Put him in the position of making reads, whether that's deep to dump off (Cam's normal progression) or short-to-long. Doesn't matter. Make him play "normal", just limit the risk if they don't see what they like (such as high across middle or late). Can do that when you have this backfield and this OLine.

The other option is to pass more but simplify the routes/progression/plays. That would eventually catch up to us, and hurt BH personally.

They're letting him grow into it. With a kid with that kind of talent, best possible route IMHO. At some point the light will really go off (he's not doing bad).

The only issue I have is rhythm. Would love to see him get into one and see what would happen. We've seen some of that, but not enough yet. I have faith it's coming though.
