I'm kind of torn on this; for a couple games in a row, Harris has just thrown the ball up for grabs on deep routes, and LSU has scored on these. Are these bad plays, or part of the designed offensive scheme?

Bad- there's no timing on the play, people are just standing around waiting for the ball. Could as easily have been intercepted.

Good- These are deep, and probably at least as effective as a punt if they're picked (today's was on 3rd and long, can't remember if the others were). And you have to wonder a little bit- Dupre and Johnson were the top WRs coming in, you have to figure they should do well in jump ball situations 1 on 1.

Still, having seen that play 2 consecutive games makes me worried a bit. I don't want to see that occur against Bama (unless, of course, we score on it again).

Thoughts?

We have great athletes at wr. I'm all for giving them a chance to out jump the cb. Not every pass is going to be to a wide open receiver and I don't mind giving our guys a chance. Double coverage would be a different story but in one on one situations I like our chances.

We have to win those opportunities. You have to win one on one regardless of how good or poor a throw is. Johnson went up and got it. Probably the best job an LSU wr has done in that spot this year. Dural vs. Syracuse was pretty big.

The Johnson TD was not meant to be a jump ball. It was just underthrown.

They seem to work just about every time. And Harris hasn't thrown an INT all year. The coaching staff and Harris know what the frick they're doing

Yeah it was under thrown because it's almost impossible to throw a ball 35 yards across the field and 45 yards deep.

Agree, Harris has put 75% of those long bombs on the money and has put the ball to where only our receivers can catch them. I have noticed this about his passes, he puts them in spots to where only our recievers can catch them, or they will be incomplete.

The point is, it was not some random throw-it-up-for-grabs play.

Yea they tend to be on downs where a turnover is as good as a punt.

5-star WRs vs. 2-star CBs

I'll take some jump balls

WRs need to start making plays anyways, put them in the spotlight

I'm with you on those concerns. But then I remember teams stack the box and leave their DB's on island against the likes of Dural, Dupre, and TJ3. By doing so, the odds shift dramatically in out favor. Mediocre DB's have no chance against that type of talent. So I'm all for attacking the mismatch and letting our WR's make big plays.

Like Kaepernick did against the Saints last year (I think).

I'd say we've been getting lucky against less talented teams, but then you have to consider Dupre doing it against Florida... that's an excellent secondary giving up that play too. Makes you consider that it might not all be just luck, that there is something more to it. Maybe Cameron is comfortable enough with Harris' arm and the skill a couple of his WRs have, to give them the green light to just throw it up on "broken plays" etc, figuring we have the skill players to make it work?

Ya, arm punts don't bother me one bit.

Now, if one of those DBs ever come up with the ball and our WR falls down. We're fricked. That's basically a "kick six" set up.

But, sometimes you got to let your playmakers make plays.

Well it was 3rd down or an ending to a half any ways..

It's 1v1.. I like our guys.. and at worst an INT there is a punt.. It's already better than our punter..

Mettsiah would throw it up to Odell and Jarvis all the time. Same thing, different players

You ask the basic question if these were designed plays? The answer is no !! Only designed plays like this are when time has run out and you are throwing the ball in the end zone hoping for a prayer.

that's the other thing in the "Good" column, Harris is throwing it deeper than we're punting it.

These are likely designed plays. There is nothing wrong with these being designed plays. The receivers we have are fricking studs and they need opportunities to make plays downfield.

Notice that two Tds were 3rd n long. Like Dupree said its smart because it's like a punt if they pick it off and it's probably a better punt than our super star Aussie
