we got steamrolled in the SEC. naturally our D was stellar against the weak teams on our OOC schedule. we got tougher but our D was completely dominated by notre dame in the bowl. not to mention folding again late against bama.

The D was bad the first few games, but with some experience by Godcheaux and Adams, and the change to Beckwith, the D got MUCH better. They played great against Bama, excluding the last drive of regulation...and great against Ole Miss. I don't even worry about Notre Dame because Chavis had already checked out and he fricked us that game.

To everyone trying to say the defense was chavis' fault:

Because of personnel limitations, last year might have been Chavis' best coaching performance.

The last two years were by far the worst of Chavis's tenure.

Hard it believe that coach that coached LSU now sucks since he went to another team. John Brady sucks not john Chavis . Hope to see some apologies when he brings ATM out of the basement. If miles didn't hire this guy he would have been fired 3 years ago!

the way I see it is chavis kept the program afloat but also kept us from reaching our maximum potential.

It's actually SBnation, but thanks for playing

LSU's defense completely shut down ole miss and bama , for 59 minutes. Even after bama tied the score at 13, that was still 23 points below their season average.

It's not the defenses fault the offense couldn't score a touchdown with 1st and goal on the 6 thanks to..yep, thats right, an amazing play from the defense. And talk about miss st and auburn all you want, but the offense wasn't exactly lighting the world on fire in those two games.

And yall put entirely too much stock in a bowl game. Chavis clearly couldn't be less interested for the bowl game.

Its gonna be funny when the defense that was #1 in the league and only lost 3 starters will wreck shop and everyone will give credit to steele and orgeron, completely ignoring the fact that chavis had finished #1 with more or less the same defense in '14

Yes, that was a very misleading stat last year. Other than in the Ole Miss game (and even that took a mind-bogglingly stupid play by Bo to giftwrap the interception for us) and the no-call-aided late interception against A&M, they never really got the crucial stop when we needed it. To their credit, though, they did force the big turnover by Yeldon to give us the go-ahead FG against Alabama before then giving up the tying drive in the final seconds.

I think the reason we had the statistical lead that we did was the nature of our offense. Running the ball so much and (usually) so well kept the clock churning so our defense didn't have to play as many series as some of the other defenses in the league.

If they stay around the same level ranking nationally, it will just prove that it's more about the players than simply the scheme.

Credit will ultimately go to Miles because the style of play is of his choosing since he came to LSU. The coaches (Steele and O) will deserve credit if they improve on the goals they set for this team including more pressures, turnovers, and negative plays. It will also show that Chavis, while great, was indeed replaceable just like Pelini was when Chavis came in after the Co-DC year. That's only possible if you have the right philosophy, the right players, and coaches who can bring in a scheme to help execute it.

One still has to account for the proliferation of teams running HUNH offenses and trying to get 90 plus plays in a game. All offensive and defensive stats are skewed comparing numbers in the last 3-4 years to the ones even 7-10 years ago. Down vote away.

If you are saying you would like an offense as productive as 2013 for LSU and a better defense than 2013, I'm with you. Who wouldn't want the main two RBs averaging about 7 YPC and the WRs and QB with those numbers.

Stats are for loosers!!! The Tigers will be fine if the QB's manage the offense.
