I didn't read all of the discussion in this thread. Here in MS, he is looked at as a damn good coach, but just a notch out of the top escehelon. I can tell you, what damaged his reputation a lot more than the mulligan bowl was a few very high profile clock management frickups...other than that, he is right up there with the best of them....

Miles is 123-45 as a head coach, 73% winning record and 7-5 in Bowl Games.
At his current school, he is 95-24 (79.9%), 6-3 in Bowls, including 2-1 in BCS bowls, 1-1 in BCS Championship games.
As a head coach, he's made 12 straight bowl games (and only his first season as a coach was he not bowl eligible at Okie State) - he's the first coach to defeat Bob Stoops twice. At LSU, he's defeated Florida, Alabama, Auburn and Tennessee in the same season.
Frankly, there aren't 5 current coaches who are better than Les or have a better resume than Les, period. It's his goofiness and awkward way of dealing with the press that causes this - and it only endears him to us.

What's his record vs Heisman winners?
3-1?
3-1?

Please list all the NCs the other coaches not named Saban have won. I reiterate, 10 wins in the SEC West 4 straight years with some pretty average QB play. He never gets the credit he deserves.

Funny how 1 game has Les Miles out of the top 10 college coaches
Les gains credit for:
Continuing a high level program
Handling crisis
Never revealing the secret playbook
Excellent recruiting
Supporting an excellent DC when he got one
He doesn't get credit for:
Building a program
Having a "highly disciplined" team
He also gets bonus negatives for his part in the most boring NCG of all time.
He had bonus positives for being the "Mad Hatter" but that has certainly worn off of late.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Does get credit for maintaining and even surpassing what he inherited. Which is as rare as building a program. He had no control on what he inherited.
His teams are as disciplined as anyone else's competing for Nat'l Championships, except maybe 1.
His perception doesnt equal his resume, but perception is reality. I think Miles likes it this way. The more under the radar during the off season the better. But he had to chuckle with a few of these names.

Sumlin is the most overrated coach in America. Walked in to two jobs with great QB's that made him look a whole lot better than he is. We will see the real Sumlin this year and it won't be pretty.

Stoops is in there for having most pre-season #1 teams lose in the first half of the season.

Yeah, I vividly remember November 2011. We were steamrolling everybody, and everyone in the room knew we were going to absolutely crush Oklahoma State. It would have been on paper the best season in college football history.
Instead, the ESPN lobbyists wanted a rematch and got it. Saban is arguably the best coach in football and is the epitome of OCD. You don't just beat him twice in one year. Les had his foot on saban's throat winning back-to-back and outcoaching Bama, but damn...
1/9/12 happened, but after a week of sulking you couldn't help but get pumped about everyone we were returning. things looked great.
And then, our heisman finalist gets kicked off a month before TCU. It's not a stretch at all to say he was a touchdown swing and maybe even more (Arkansas 2011, 2011 SEC Championship).
The future looks fantastic, no doubt. I just think it's paramount we find a way to keep Frank Wilson at LSU for a very long time. At least lock down the 2015 and 2016 classes.

1. Saban
2. Meyer
3. Shaw
4. Miles
5. Dantonio
6. Spurrier
7. Mora
8. Stoops
9. Fisher
10. Richt
consistency is what makes a great coach, just because you have had early success does make you a great coach. it is how you sustain it.

Wasn't Okie St. A shite show before he got there and then left the keys to Gundy who continued this rise?

Yup.
He also beat Stoops 2 of his first 3 attempts. It took Mack Brown 8 tries to beat Bob his second time

At LSU
Three conference championship appearances - 2 wins.
Two national championship appearances - one win.
Three BCS bowl appearances - 2 wins
Nine bowl appearances - 7 wins
Seven 10 win seasons
Five 11 win seasons
Three 12 win seasons
Two 13 win seasons
Now name me the ones who have done all of that in that list
Now name me the ones who had to play Auburn, Florida, Alabama yearly. You know teams that actually went to the NCG at least twice the last 8 years. Just the BCS appearances for those 3 teams in the last 8 years, is hard to find on any successful Coach's SOS.
Also you seem to not understand what having all that NFL talent leaving early does. We are sending record numbers of talent to the NFL yearly, and still compete for the conference title every year.
Seems like you idiots are just judging Miles against Saban.

I'm just going to shut you up on this. He may be overrated, but he can coach some offense and QBs. Sam Bradford as a true freshman had statically the best season for a true freshman QB ever. He had Case Keenum as a true freshman all the way to a senior. He also did it again with Manziel. It's hilarious that people think after three very successful QBs in a row, that this guy doesn't know what he's doing. He's also recruiting the hell out of that program, and it's only a matter of time before they are elite.

Just typical bullshite "flavor of the day" sports media.

Can't argue with the way that staff prepared for the game. Hopefully he makes up for it.
