EDIT: Typo mistake. It's 0.144.

Not too egregious (especially on East Boyd at 3:30 AM), but seeing as how it's happened before with this team with another player, Mainieri obviously has to be strict for PR and the image of the program.

The guy's just a freshman, so hopefully he's out of the doghouse and pitching for the team by next year. Then again, all the recent roster implications make the whole situation more difficult.

I wish there were some kind of warning system in place to where cops couldn't throw peoples' lives in chaos like this over a single harmless event that hundreds of other people do every night after midnight.

Which is where the "every situation is a little different" quote comes into play...

quote:

Kevin Koziol was dismissed from the team after being arrested in January 2011 and booked on counts of DWI, reckless operation of a vehicle and disobeying a red light.

“Every situation is a little different,” Mainieri said, referring to the Koziol dismissal. “My concern is for the young man (Baranik), how he’s living his life, and to make sure we see what help we can get for him and make sure he understands the ramifications of doing things he shouldn’t.”

Doc - It was .0144, not .0114. There is a pretty big difference. He never should have been behind the wheel. He'll be suspended, and will hopefully straighten up and work his arse off when he comes back. I am all for second chances.

No. The BAC number is the percent.

If the BAC is 0.144, that means 0.144%.

That's fine, my point was just that there is a pretty big difference between .0114 and .0144.

I don't think they are throwing the kid's life into chaos. They are teaching him a valuable lesson. He is lucky to learn it early. I also don't think it is a "harmless" act (drunk driving).

I guess that depends on his patterns of behavior over time, but still, the DWI system itself is pretty draconian and capricious. It's not very just.

Perhaps, but that goes for quite a few of our laws. The limit is well known to everyone, and anyone who drives over that limit is making the choice to do so. I just don't blame the cops in these scenarios. Especially when 2 bikers were mowed down a few weeks ago. You know they are going to be extra strict in the application of the laws.

Laws are typically made for the lowest common denominator. Most male Louisianans aren't going to be phased at .08 at all, but someone like my GF would be twisted at that level.

I don't blame the cops, but 90% of those who drink have driven intoxicated, and probably with as high a BAC as this guy. Suspend him a month or so, and get over it. Send a message, teach the kid a lesson and move on.

Neither do I, by the way. I was just going off on a digression.

For the record, he did screw his team over, especially considering what happened with Koziol last year. I'm sure Mainieri told the team that they couldn't take these kinds of risks, and he did it anyway.

Also, it's not like it's the offseason anymore, either. I know that baseball has different standards from football, but you still shouldn't roll the dice like this the weekend before your opening series.

I think we are in agreement. Good discussion

I would have no problem with that, but even if he gets back on the team he will likely just ride the pine for the rest of the season.

Yeah, from a baseball perspective the bigger issue is with his dedication. Doing something like this right at the beginning of the season makes you wonder where the kid's priorities are.

For a 200 lb person, assuming he was out for 3 hours or so, you are looking at probably 7-9 drinks.

Probably so, and that is fine but I still think you have to maintain some consistency and standards with the team and give the guy a chance to earn his way back into good graces. I fully supported JJ's reinstatement and I support the same here unless you get some pattern of repeat abuse.

Do the right thing, move on and let the kid try to earn his way back to respect unless it's just determined he has little value to the team. This is where baseball differs from football IMO.

Some of the people in this thread are ridiculous. Questioning a kids priorities and dedication? He's in college. Are you telling me that college kids can't make mistakes?

Also, for all of you DWI is the scourge of the earth people, it's still just a misdemeanor. It's not a huge deal.

I don't anyone sane is questioning the kid's dedication or has a problem with these college kids going get drunk at a bar. They just think he should use better judgement when it comes to finding a way home after getting plowed.
