I know all these people say pay the athletes, etc., etc. The real issue is the value of wahat any athlete gets from college is possibly more valuble then what they could ever lose from the Univeersity selling their memorabilia, etc. It is a very rare athlete that the school makes more money on; than their actual cost to the program.

The majority of athletes get a degree, they leave school with no tuition debt, room, board, etc. They get the opportunity to go to college and to enjoy that experience, meet different people, places, etc. The average college student does not get the same benefit. I know it would be really hard to calculate, but most college athletes can return to their State/College town and rely on contacts and access to people who will in turn help them with jobs, career advice, grad school, etc. How can anyone say that they aren't benefitting from being in college. They benefit more than the average student.

Without college sports, the majority of these athletes would not have the same opportunities. Not even close. There are 32 NFL teams, each with 85 on a roster and the majority are veteran players. The real travesty is someone not explainging math to these kids that think the NFL, NBA, to some extent MLB, is a viable career option. It is like depending on winning the lottery for your retirement.

I don't feel sorry for any guy who if he never played another down of football, with the right life choices would be able to support his family and provide himself with a career.

game used jersey for a potential heisman trophy winner and possibly an all-time great in the NFL..... yep, easily will go for A LOT of money if the auction is publicized properly

Ole Ball Corch should pitch in a signed visor to go with the jersey. THAT would be a prize.

If school A averages selling 1,000 jerseys and team B averages selling 10,000 jerseys, then you're creating a recruiting advantage.

If booster A promises to buy an autographed jersey from a player's first game his freshman year for 50k, is that player getting market value for his jersey, or selling his recruitment.

If Fournette had decided to go to Tulane, how many less jerseys, and less money would he make than he would at LSU.

These players have enough items that they can sell once they are done in college.

And to the poster that said that the contacts that these players make while in college, I would imagine Joe McKnight would have a lot more job offers in the NOLA area had he went to LSU instead of USC.

I agree with the article.

The "amateur" tag is largely just a farce to keep the league as a non-paid internship in many respects. Because it really doesnt hold up logically or morally in many regards.

Great gesture by the LF and he is truly one of a kind. It does sort of bother me that a broke college student has to offer up his most valuable tangible item (beside his body). We dont know what our coaches do with their money privately, but I would rather see Les cough up a game check, something he can afford to lose more than anyone in the football program, as opposed to our student athletes rising to the occasion more than our adult leaders.

Thats just assuming our admins and coaches didnt privately donate some funds (im sure they did)

In addition, they get acces to the coaching, training, and nutrition to maximize the chance to go pro.
Aside from LF, there are essentially no football players who can go straight from HS to the NFL. There are very few who can afford full-time coaching, a world-class workout facility, and the detailed coaching that will help them get there.
No one counts that as a value when looking at what the universities get vs the athletes, but it is huge.

It also is undeniable that, despite the fame of a LF, there would be someone that would be the top player in the NCAA this year and he would be selling jerseys. In other words, if LF had chosen another road in life and was never even a high school player, LSU would still be selling the crap out of some jersey worn by some other kid. The schools make the kids as much as the other way around.

Those things considered, and with the potential for abuse by boosters buying stuff from players for huge prices, means the NCAA cannot open the door for private auctions. Whether this does so, well, that's for them to decide

frick them. Fournette makes money for them and LSU. He should be able to donate the money AND sell jerseys with his damn name on it to reap the benefits.

Not LF or LSU related, but NCAA related. My favorite quote about the stupidity of the NCAA comes from Jerry Tarkanian:

“The NCAA is so mad at Kentucky it will probably slap another two years probation on Cleveland State.’’

Really? So do away with amatuer status completely? Can we now trade for players?
