There's a difference between saying, "called strike three," and, "strike three, swinging." If the PBP guy says it's "called," I'm going to assume the batter didn't swing. And since the job of a PBP guy is to paint a picture of what's happening, it's a pretty big difference.

Something like that. Something that would allow the listener to know it was a walk. Is it really that absurd to say " called ball four?"
