I guess this may have been discussed, I just could not find a thread on it.

In the TCU game Saturday their star shortstop, Guthrie, twice almost fell to the ground holding his back after missing swings in the middle of the game. It looked pretty painful for him to swing.

Florida took him out and moved their second baseman to shortstop and put in a new second baseman. The very next inning they missed a routine looking double play by hair, which raised the question as to whether the new middle infield combo turned it as fast as it would have been with Guthrie.

I have not read anything about his injury status. Is there a thread on this or an article someone can link me to? I would think if Guthrie cannot play or is not at full speed that would be a big deal. I know it would be a big deal for us if we lost one of our starting middle infielders.

When they showed him in the dugout Guthrie looked mighty distraught. Its hard to believe if his back hurt as much as it looked that it would be fully healed by now.

They brought him back from an ankle injury way too early too.

He's been battling nagging injuries for about a month now. Not sure if it has always been his back though. No clue about whether he's in the lineup tonight.

He's not the biggest stick but he's a fantastic defensive SS.

Good post, was curious about this too.

From the TCU game he looked done for the season...

Their RF hurt his knee or ankle as well. Don't know the status of either, but Guthrie is 1 hell of a baseball player!

Is their RF Maldonado? I think he has the best average on the team.

Speaking of which, I wonder if Mark Guthrie is going to get Kim Mulkey-like air time?

Shoulder? They were saying he can't throw. Seems important for a right fielder, but I'm no coach.

Initial report from Sully after their last game was that he was dealing with muscle spasms and expected to play tonight

Yes, Maldonado is their RF. He hurt his ankle and shoulder both in the past week.

I'd imagine Maldonado plays, but not sure about Guthrie. It's the National Championship, they are going to play if they can.

Backs are funny. They can respond with treatment or they can take weeks to get better.

My guess is that they, unless he's 100%, they will sit him game one and give him a chance to play in games 2 and 3.

their RF cant throw either. jammed his shoulder diving back into 3B last week. feel like we'll be testing that arm early & often.

That makes the most sense. This will be worth watching. Back spasms are not like leg cramps, there is usually something going on with the back. I will be interested to see how he swings the bat. I think he had this problem before TCU game and couldn't play through it.

They switched up the lineup and put their RF at DH the last couple games. No clue about Guthrie though.

Injuries suck. Especially at a crucial time as this. Hope they can play, and hope Walker can be cleared to pitch for us. This should be a war of a series. Hoping for no more injuries for either team.

I know when I've had back spasms, you never know what's going to trigger it. Could be something as simple as picking up a book. And once you've had one, for a little while afterwards you are overly cautious for fear of triggering another one.

I know his aunt. I'll try to get some info but I'm not sure she will tell if she knows. BRB

They don't look sharp defensively at all without him

That was just one game though

We will have to keep the bats up and use our speed to our benefit
