They were not even LSU fans. That story was made up by the killer. Looks like a big redneck disaster to me. Shame they have to drag LSU into it.

Witnesses: 2 shot in dispute over Alabama-LSU football game
Posted by The Associated Press November 10, 2008 6:29 PM
Categories: Breaking News
Witnesses said a man and his former wife were shot to death over an argument about the Alabama-Louisiana State University football game, though a spokesman for the slain man's family disputed that today.

"Basing it on this ball game is totally false," said Shannon Odom, the half-brother of Dennis James Smith.

Smith, 41, and Donna Kaye Hall Smith, 39, were shot to death about 7 p.m. Saturday in the rural community of Owassa in southern Alabama, the Conecuh County sheriff's office said. The two divorced about five years ago but had recently gotten back together and were planning to remarry, Odom said.

Michael W. Williams, 28, was charged with two counts of murder in the shooting at his home, where he and others had watched the game. He was being held without bond.

People at Williams' home said the dispute was over the game, which Alabama won 27-21 in overtime, an investigator said. Witnesses said Williams was an Alabama fan and Dennis Smith rooted for LSU, but Odom disputed that, describing Smith as an "adamant Tide fan."

Odom said the problem may have been between Smith and a co-worker of his who is related to Williams and was at Williams' home Saturday. Authorities also said Donna Smith was related to Williams' girlfriend.

"I think there's more to it than just the ball game," Conecuh County Sheriff Edwin Booker said. "We're still investigating."

An investigator said alcohol may have been a factor.

According to witnesses, Dennis Smith called Williams after the game, and the Smiths went to Williams' home, where a fight led to the shooting. Dennis Smith had a pistol and Williams had a shotgun, authorities said.

In the phone call, someone reportedly said, "Alabama just got lucky and LSU should have won," though it wasn't clear who said it.

Booker said Smith "jumped out of his truck and hit Williams."

Odom said the Smiths were driving to another town to visit a family member and he didn't know why they stopped at Williams' home.

He said Donna Smith had just called her mother to talk about the game.

"Everything was cool," he said. "Next thing we know, they're dead."

$2M BAIL SET IN CONECUH COUNTY, ALA., SLAYINGS RELATIVES DISPUTE FOOTBALL MOTIVE
Tuesday, November 11, 2008 By CONNIE BAGGETTStaff Reporter
EVERGREEN — A 28-year-old man was being held Monday on $2 million bail in the Saturday evening shotgun slayings of a Brewton area couple. Relatives of the couple, meanwhile, disputed accounts that an argument over the University of Alabama vs. Louisiana State University football game sparked the gunfire.

"My brother was an adamant Alabama fan," said Shannon Odom, half-brother of Dennis Smith, who was killed along with his wife, Donna Hall Smith.

On Monday, Michael Williams remained in the Conecuh County Detention Center charged with two counts of murder.

Investigators said Sunday that witnesses reported that the Smiths traveled from their home to Williams' home in the Owassa community after they had argued about the 27-21 overtime win for No. 1-ranked Alabama.

According to investigators, the argument erupted when Dennis Smith, whom they had described as an LSU fan, phoned Williams, an Alabama fan, following the game.

Once the Smiths arrived, the confrontation became physical, Smith brandished a pistol and Williams shot him about 7 p.m., investigators reported. Donna Smith threatened Williams and was hit by a blast from a 12-gauge Mossberg shotgun, witnesses told the Sheriff's Office.

Williams' girlfriend, Jennifer Smith, is the late Donna Smith's niece, according to relatives and investigators.

Odom and Donna Goree, a sister of Dennis Smith, said that he did have a temper, but only when provoked. "The story about the ball game was told by the killer," Goree said. "It was not about the football game. We are all just in shock."

Couple reconciled

Odom said the Smiths had divorced two years ago, but reconciled in August and were happy and considering remarrying.

Smith, 40, was an avid outdoorsman who adored his children — 18-year-old Cassie and 21-year-old J.D. — and was proud of his son's decision to join the Army, Odom said.

J.D. Smith is stationed in Kuwait, he said.

"My brother was shot twice in the back, my sister-in-law shot in the face," Odom said.

Sheriff Edwin Booker said that his office would issue no further details about the case in order to protect the integrity of the investigation.

"It was not all about the ball game," Booker did say. "There was bad blood between Jennifer Smith, Williams' girlfriend, and Donna Smith. Williams had told her not to come around his place months ago.

"Williams had legal problems recently and was charged with threatening his ex-wife with a gun."

The sheriff indicated that the Saturday events also involved drinking. "Both these men had explosive tempers, and when you add alcohol, it ended with deadly results," Booker said.

Past charges

Court records show that Dennis Smith had been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol three times over the last few years; with criminal mischief in 2006; and with domestic violence assault in 2008. The online records did not make clear the identity of the alleged victim in the domestic violence case, which had been set for trial this month.

Neighbors said that Williams served as a trucking company mechanic for years, but was recently let go. He was working in recent weeks for several logging companies, keeping their equipment running.

Donna Smith was a receptionist at Brewton Motor Inn.

Odom said there are many questions that need to be answered.

"It just does not all add up," Odom said. "I can't see how in the world it could have happened like they said."

If Saturday's confrontation did involve football, it would not be the first time such an argument ended in death in Alabama.

In 2007, three Prattville students and a Montgomery teenager were charged with murder in a shooting that apparently occurred after an argument over whether Wetumpka or Prattville had a better high school team.

Didn't this take place in Mobile? How is it that BR is a shite hole even becomes a topic of conversation for Finebaum's Magnificent World of Traveling Goofballs Radio Show in the first place? The guy's a turd head who wouldn't know what southern class and gentility was if it bit him in the butt.

I am convinced of one thing. If Finebaum wouldn't have found a niche in using his mouth as a manure production facility on the radio, he would have been a cop so that he could have a shinny little badge to get people to respect him. He is the most insignificant shadow of a man, and yet people give him so much more credit than he is actually worth it's just sickening.

Actually took place about an hour north of Mobile - near the town of Brewton.

Finebaum knows what to say - negative publicity is what his profession thrives on.

What a loser. How's about we tie this guy up to Death Valley, and we'll let every fan give him a nice punch in the face when they walk in the gate for 20 bucks? Sounds like an easy way to make a quick 1.8 million dollars.

Alabama fans thrive on trying to tear down another schools program to make themselves feel good. This started immediately after saban was hired the pimp went after miles and louisiana with a vengeance. They went after tubby and fat fill. They are trying to turn us against miles because they know miles and LSU are the only things that will keep saban from dominating the sec west every year. The pimp speaks of the fear with us when all along the fear lives within them. They fear miles to there core being. Stand strongly behind Les and don't play there game.

I occasionally listen to Finebaum when I hear that certain guests are on there. Herbstreit is a regular on there, as well as a couple other respectable reporters. The rest of the show is crap though. It is the same half-dozen people calling in every single day and spouting off a bunch of ignorant crap. Shane. Patsy. I'm not sure of the other names, but if you listen for more than a day or two, you'll recognize that it is the same voices every day. I started listening a few weeks ago when Tony Franklin was on after the firing at Auburn. I kept listening just for entertainment. I heard the comments he made yesterday. Despicable. He is a Bammer supporter and likes to stir the pot, like someone else said earlier. He is loving that Auburn is having a down year, he made fun of Fulmer crying at the press conference after he announced he was stepping down, and his nose is so brown from Saban's arse that you would think he was a hemhoirroid back there. But he'll be fine, because you actually have to have a large listening audience for something like this to matter. His ratings have been falling. Even after he switched over to an FM station in the past year or so, they continue to fall.

Key word: SOME. I would bet there are SOME Alabama fans not crazy about Saban or Florida fans not crazy about Meyer.

When will someone punch him out or just put him out of his misery? Does he ever go out in public, if anyone knows where, I'll volunteer to do it. Maybe a pie in the face would be appropriately also.
