Agree that Saban brought us back on the map but like someone said in another thread, Les has maintained the program. Not many coaches can do that. Saban has built Bama's program on fear. Miles players love him as a coach.

As much as i do not like Saban he did bring and leave the program in a great condition. Les came to a football program with all the pieces of the pie put together.

And if somebody, liking Saban or not, just wants to come in and say that: I let it go. That's fine, complimentary and fair. It's when the Sabanistas, in cult-like fashion, repeat a mantra:

"Saban made LSU"

"LSU was nothing before 'The One'"

"Les won with Saban's players"

"LSU was in ashes"

ETC., that I have to step in and make a correction --- for the record.

even if that were true, it still takes a hell of a coach to keep it going and to win games consistently. I mean there are tons of examples of coaches who take winning programs and run them into the ground....Larry Coker and Miami comes to mind immediately and there are many others

And PJ was one of the worst about saying Les was a Larry Coker, or even that Coker was better than Les.

That kind of stuff begs for a response.

We were in the ASHES stage when Saban got here

We were in the ashes stage when DiNardo go here. When Saban got here we had 2 bad seasons in a row, but 2 good and one decent year before that. A big part of the blame for those bad seasons goes to Lou Tepper. He was the Dc b/c Carl Reese left for Texas. He left b/c Texas paid him a lot more. Its not that GD was not willing to pay assistants, but LSU was not. We could have hired Mack Brown instead of Gerry but Joe Dean didn't want to pay Mack more than he was making at UNC. If it was up to Dean, we would not have fired GD. He also wanted to low ball Saban, but Emmert (and Saban) saw the potential if LSU was willing to committ the resources. Emmert hired Saban. Saban gets a lot of credit, but the biggest share should go to Emmert. Saban could never do what he did without Emmert. Why didn't he win at Mich State at the same level? Why didn't Zook win at Florida? Giving Saban credit for LSU's current success is nothing but an atempt to be little Miles. Since PF has been so critical of Miles, its nothing but his own un willing ness to admit he was wrong about Les.

ETA. Right now LSU is all Miles and Bama is all Saban, and LSU is better.

I called him out on the Coker>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Miles from about a year ago, during this pre-season or early season and he denied it. I posted a link and he said he must have had too much to drink and took it back.

I give him credit - he has backed off of the completely anti-Miles attitude he used to have. The way he was talking, I thought, maybe, he had stopped drinking the Saban Kool-Aid. But here he is on here again.

I'm just doing my part.

Bear Bryant built the program Bama is today. What's wrong with building on what others have started. This is how the world works.

Nice. I had the time, so I listened to about 2 hours of the show today, to refill my reservoir of enemy tears.

He's not a very good host and it's not a very good show. But today was somewhat entertaining and I'm glad I made the exception. Someone had Kevinator's call posted on youtube. That's quality entertainment right there (Finebaum having to reason with a complete Gump)

Saban absolutely built LSU's program to what it is today.

No. Saban, with his assistants and the administration, brought the program to the level it was in 2004-05. We are now in 2011. Semantics do make a difference.

Its pretty baffling how many LSU refuse to give Saban at least some credit for where the program is today

It's pretty baffling how many at LSU qualify Les Miles' success by giving some of the credit to Nick Saban.

I swear, Miles could have five undefeated NC seasons in a row and the Sabanophiles would still be babbling about how Saban had a huge role in Miles' success.

I loved the post about the giant statue.

Wonder how long the Gumps will continue to say Saban made the LSU program what it is today? Les Miles has been here 7 years. Another 25 years, and they will still be saying Saban made LSU's program.

If that is what it takes to swallow defeat, more to them. The score remains the same, LSU 9-6.

It used to be said that Miles "only wins because he has Saban's players." I think we can all say that Les has completely destroyed that argument.

Now, Gumps are just desperate to say something because not only is Miles winning with his own players, he's now beating Nick coaching Nick's players.

Just relax and enjoy the stupidity...and the tears.

And he does know football

PJ know football history as well as anyone I've encounter. But he's not good at analysis. I understand why people want to give Saban all the credit, we hadn't won a NC since 58 and he won one. But there so much more that had to happen for Saban to do that here.
