Victor won't be eligible until SEC play. I suspect LSU will play a much tougher OOC schedule than the last 3 years solely based upon the fact that TV networks will help set up good games so they can show Simmons. That being the case, 11-2 in non-conf play probably won't be expected.

I think it's almost a given that Mickey is gone. I have been of the opinion that Martin may come back, but he might be playing his way into leaving right now.

Assuming Martin stays for purposes of discussion, I think the Final 4 is a very audacious expectation for this team. There will be some very good pieces, but frankly I don't trust the coaching staff to put it all together. The turnovers, mental mistakes, inefficient half-court offense, up and down effort, and complete lack of situational awareness are systemic problems that aren't isolated just to this season. I find it hard to believe that Jones will magically fix all of those problems next year.

The one caveat for me (and this is a HUGE longshot) is if LSU can get Newman to join the class. At that point (again, assuming Martin stays) you would have 4 McDonalds AA's on your roster with 4 guys who are capable of creating their own offense regardless of shitty half court execution. Plus you would have experienced role players to add to the equation. In that case I still think TOs would be a problem along with situational awareness. Also, there would be no rim protector there to make up for poor defense. Nonetheless, that raw talent still MIGHT be enough to give them a shot.

Sadly, I'm starting to subscribe to this line of thinking. I've wanted to believe in Jones from day 1 and given him the benefit of the doubt but he's made it damn near impossible for me this year. The shot selection is probably the most mystifying. Either Jones isn't stressing it to his players or he isn't getting through to them. Either way, it HAS to improve.

Maybe that's how he gets this talent to come to LSU.

People were saying that last year's team would be a Final Four team?

If both M boys stay, and add Simmons, you are looking at a very good team............
Not sure about Final Four cause of JJ's coaching methods.....

I'm sick of all this "wait til next year" BS. We've HAD the talent the last few years to make serious runs

Wtf are you talking about? The basketball team has two goid players nd no depth. Same story last year. They're not poised to make "serious runs" just because you expect they should.

Baseball made it to college world series during that time. Its a game where things are unpredictable. Either way, they're performing. Simply expecting them to win annual championships is just ludicrous. Same with football. Now take that whiny attitude and fix that shite up.

I was hoping this was going to be a thread about the football team. But yeah, hopefully the basketball team makes the Final Four too.

Same story, different time. A lot were saying that last year. As long as Jones is the coach not happening. Mediocre gameday coach, good recruiter. Plain and simple.

It's not just the McDonald's All-Americans. Many true freshman step right up. If you don't realize that, you just haven't been paying attention to college hoops for the past couple decades.

The "youth" excuse on the Rant has started to metastasize. It's now become the knee-jerk response for Ranters looking for an easy excuse for any player, regardless of the sport.

Sometimes youth is indeed a valid excuse, but not nearly as often as most people think.

Takes a lot to make a run to the Final Four.
We would need our guards to take the next step in order to be a favorite, but it could be possible.

Hornsby (or someone)- you need a dead-eye 3 pt shooter, someone that kills the zone. We currently have guys who CAN hit the 3, but you want at least one who will destroy zones and double-teams down low. Maybe Hornsby becomes the guy who hits every open look he gets.

Gray- of all our current players, Gray is the best suited to take a shot when the crowd is screaming, the world is crumbling, and the team is paralyzed. He's wild, but he doesn't freeze up. You just want him to take the right shot, but there's time to grow into that.

Quarterman- continued development is key. He's the best-suited guard to control tempo; he can see over the defense, he's athletic enough to handle the ball. You want a guy like him to control tempo; someone who will run if you want, but able to resist the run if the need is there. Someone who can apply his will on the pace of the game. Would be nice if he can become an 80% FT shooter, because he's otherwise got everything you would want in late-game situations when you want to milk the clock. He's big and quick enough to find when the defense is flying around for steals and fouls.

Patterson- you want him to become the main point guard, control the team, hit jumpers when needed, but otherwise find his big men in good spots. He just needs to be solid.

All this takes into account that we will have a very good frontline and wings, meaning Simmons produces at a high level and we get at least one of Mickey/Martin back (or someone else plays to their current level).

bruh, it's the "next year" crap that people have had enough of.

'we ar egoing to be this next year. we're going to be that next year...' what about this year? what happened to all the 'Next year is a sweet 16 team' people from last year? this year's team should (and can still be if they crawl out of this hole) special.

shite, you can go back to five years ago. "next year we'll have malcolm white anchoring us in the post and creating space for aaron dotson to get some open looks! "

you know you're my boy and this isn't personal, just hate seeing THIS YEAR's edition of the tigers be in this situation, just hoping to be on the bubble.

next year's team should be a good one, but im not ready to say two 18-year-olds are going to deliver us to a final four, didn't even read the OP to be honest, just quit reading at 'next year'

Agreed, this year so far is extremely disappointing. I thought this was lock tournament team for sure, and we still very well may make it in. That said, we shouldn't even be in this position where we're fighting for our tournament lives with 5 games to go.

But I just don't see this mantra of "NEXT YEAR!" as being as pervasive as some are leading on. Personally, I didn't have terribly high expectations for last year's team. Maybe sneak in the tourney, but probably an NIT team. I had zero expectations whatsoever for the first team under Jones and was pleasantly surprised. Obviously people have been looking forward to Simmons for quite some time, so it's understandable that people would be looking to next year. I mean, the kid is unbelievable. I don't think that looking forward to Simmons and what we could have next year necessarily means people are abandoning ship on this year's team (I'm sure some are or have).

Anyway, that's my $.02

your opinion of the backcourt is higher than mine.

final four team is a lot to ask even with a star guard coming in.

LSU needs both big men to stay.

it would be nice if this team could make it in, maybe frick around and win a game, and really set up some momentum heading into next year.

its tough to get those fickle LSU fans in that arena when they hear the same shite every year about how good we'll be only to drop inexplicable games to teams we should take care of with ease. hopefully the simmons hype can really bring a few more fans into those seats.
