You gameplan and execute against the opponent you're playing. LSU was playing Mizzou and not Alabama.

ETA: I know we're all used to seeing the Miles offense, which never changes no matter the opponent. That's inanity is over.

I still don't think our receivers route running is where it should be, sometimes they look lackadaisical

I agree. Josh Reed needs to go show these boys how to run a crisp route.

His long game needs A LOT of work, but he is amazing within 10 yards or so. Very accurate and throws catchable passes. When under pressure knows exactly where his check down is and delivers it to them.

If I'm being hyper critical I saw a LOT of passes out to the FB in the flat which just never gets us much it seems like. I'd rather passes like that go to a TE dragging across, someone a little more athletic. I do think this forced Mizzou to really defend the whole field on us though and get some guys outside the box for the run game to really open up.

Yep WRs must work with a sense of urgency. Again LSU needs to have practice time for the small things everyday. Jump balls, turning and looking for the ball for DBs and jump ball for them, stripping the ball carrier as he runs through the line if you can't tackle him at least get a hand on the ball, getting all DL to get hands up on pass plays especially 3rd down, we apparently need to practice seeing interceptions being calm when you see the ball and just make a play on it. We look too anxious out there. We also REALLY need to work on our zone coverage, lots of TOs happen in zone. Lastly we need to work damn hard on pass blocking!!! This has got to be fixed!!! If we can create a nice pocket for Etling we will be a much improved offense. If Ed O and the assistants can take notice of these things and have our boys practice these situations everyday it would improve our team drastically.

I did notice a huge difference in shedding blocks to make 1/1 tackles this week. That made a big difference in this game. But we really need to work on the above situations in football games. If we improve on these things we can become a really dominate team. GT

Don't mind if I do.

Etling does a great job of not forcing anything, and the result is a quick check down. JD Moore said himself that the game plan was to give Etling a simple read and then let him dump it off if it wasn't there, hence some of the quick throws in the flats after checking the primary read.

The plus side here - and this goes to the staff more than anything - is that having only 1 read is fine if you've got 4-5 routes being run. The defense doesn't know what the read will be and they still have to cover everything, which is why the little dump offs still get the job done for the time being.

His deep ball issues are well documented but the other concern - and the biggest concern IMO - is his inability to get the frick down on scrambles. He has no business trying to block on plays that cut back either. He takes way too many hits.

Interior Linemen looked like they were on roller skates in pass protection. Pocic was steadily knocked back 3-5 yards in pass blocking. This will not work against better Defensive linemen that we will see in FLA, Arky and Alabama and A&M

to be fair, Terry Beckner Jr is one of the better interior linemen in the SEC

I do agree that Missouri has a semi-legit DL. However, I don't feel they are on the same level as the upcoming teams. If they don't fix some of this and quick, Etling will be running for his life most of the time

This DL was on par with the ones you mentioned maybe not in depth but the starters are equal. Their DE was second only to Keyin sacks and TFL. Remember this was game 1 so I expect improvement from the Wrs and the OL. The reason we didn't pass to the WRs more often is bc they didn't get open. You can't just rely on the route or play call to get you open, these guys have to work and they need to work harder to get open period. This could be partly why the OL is struggling also. These guys can't hold em forever but I agree they need to step up like the entire defense did this week! It's the offense's turn to turn it up and then we can put a freakn TEAM out there. They now know this system works so they need to work within it to be great and go undefeated the rest of the season. It can happen too they have to WANT IT though. Have to play harder on offense period. The coaches can help too by working on where the problems are. Run blocking was fine pass blocking needs work.

Taking a closer look at this film, we still have some serious problems pass blocking.
I think that pass blocking will continue to improve when they know they don't have to hold off a rush for 5-6 seconds. Etling can get rid of the ball fast which will make their job easier.

I am always amazed when people complain about the pass blocking when the QB is taking way too long to pass the ball.

Also, not dropping back 30 feet allows the blockers to bounce rushers off of each other and not be so much one on one against speed rushers.

Dural is excellent in the open field. Just get him the ball quickly. I don't recall a WR being so good at making people miss all while looking like he's playing in slow motion.

So.... I love the play action.

But.

If the staff is trying to set up playcalling in later games by going PA on almost every pass, that's a damned good idea. It'll make em hesitate so that LF7 can hit the hole, and once he does it's game over.

But if we just continue to use PA near-exclusively, smart defensive teams like Bama are going to kill Danny. Saban will bite the bullet of perhaps letting us grind out running 1st downs in order to let a blitzing safety or LB get a clean kill shot on the QB.

So hopefully by the time we play Bama, Danny will be able to have a good idea of how to read the D and will have the authority to hand it off or dump it off quick, or stick with the PA if he sees that it's there.
