Why change the double-elimination concept that exists throughout the entire NCAA tournament just for the championship round?

yeah .. i went up there the whole time in 2009 .. that was a long long arse time .. we got there on friday and literally stayed just a day under two solid weeks .. i love baseball and can watch 3 games a day .. but i found out on that trip that i do have my limit when it comes to eating steak .. which is a barrier i thought i would never reach ..

wife and i and friends are just planning on going up there to catch game 3 for LSU and the championship series (regardless off who is in it) this time ..

I love the irony of people whining about the new ball park and ESPN being all about money, while longing for the winner take all 1 game format which CBS staged for, money and ratings.

that CBS and the NCAA never got .. so CBS got the hell away from college baseball .. let's face it .. and i hate to say this for ESPN .. but for the most part, ESPN is doing the sport of college baseball a favor televising it as much as it is .. i have no problem with them doing it on their own terms ..

The CWS did really well during the pre-ESPN days.

I like the three game format. Baseball simply is not a one game takes all sport.

The one game winner takes all has been very very good to LSU over the years. I am not suggesting LSU could not have beaten Miami twice in 1996 or Stanford twice in 2000, but winning the one game for it all has worked well for the Tigers.

ESPN annoys the crap out of me and I think they have ruined a lot with their shock jock and debate format about everything but one thing's for sure:

The CWS wouldn't be where it's at in popularity without ESPN.

The best of 3 format has treated us well too.

I like that you have to have two loses at least in a double elimination tournament, and a team with a loss can't knock off unbeaten team with a good start from a pitcher.

remember when the CWS was just a straight up, eight-team double elimination tournament ? i think they went to that national championship game in 1989 .. also, remember when you had eight, 6-team regionals ? and no super regionals .. just straight up four or five day wars .. and the regionals were always on memorial day weekend .. hell, if this were the late 80s or early to mid 90s, we would be on day four of the college world series right now .

The CWS went to the 2 bracket one championship game format in 1988. 1987 was the last true double elimination CWS. Sadly, I remember it well because that was the year that the Tigers lost 6 - 5 in 10 innings to Stanford. The Tigers scored 3 in the top of the 10th, only to have Stanford win it with a 2 out grand slam in the bottom of the 10th. Brutal way to be eliminated and end the season.

I still prefer the old double elimination format to what's in place now. With the 2 bracket system, you eliminate a chance to play half of the teams in the field, unless you make the NC series. I liked it better when it was possible for any team to be matched up against any other.
