and a lot of those complaining in here are probably too young to remember the pre-internet days where it was almost virtually impossible to get even regional scores unless you were sitting at alex box and bill franques was reading them to you between innings .

Never will forget the famous 1989 series with A&M in College Station. It was Memorial Day weekend and we were coming back from the beach. Forgot how, but somehow I found out LSU had to beat A&M twice on the last day to advance.

Stopped in Montgomery for lunch and found a paper with the sports. My eyes and heart are racing to see if we had won and saw LSU's name first so I knew we'd won the first game but underneath it was 'Texas A&M' first. Darn. But the game got over too late so it only said "Texas A&M vs LSU".

I'll take a Tuesday night game on ESPN or Ronnie Rantz singing Chris Guillot's praises on CSS anyday.

I thought the championship series was Monday-Wednesday? When did that change?

This changed only for this year. The Swimming championships start this year on Wed, I think, and this is why they bumped it a day. It had to do with facilities and hotels.....swimming trials are actually a huge event in Omaha. They take up the entire Quest Center which is right across the street from the new bball park.

You guys and gals that complain about today's format have no idea what it was like in the early 90's. Back then, WWL/98.1 didn't carry the baseball games regularly. Then on top of that ESPN was your only avenue to find out who won. So used to be you had to wait until after sports center about 11 pm and watch the "highlights" of the games in Omaha, not even the full games to see who won because of course back then there was no internet like today.

I'll take what we have today anytime over the 80's and early 90's

yeah .. i remember that series .. i think we lost to UNLV if memory serves and fought our way back .. A&M had some insane record like 58-5 or something .. i believe it was pat garrity that came off of the bench and got the game winning hit for us to send us to omaha .. ben mcdonald was on that team ..

remember when the CWS was just a straight up, eight-team double elimination tournament ? i think they went to that national championship game in 1989 .. also, remember when you had eight, 6-team regionals ? and no super regionals .. just straight up four or five day wars .. and the regionals were always on memorial day weekend .. hell, if this were the late 80s or early to mid 90s, we would be on day four of the college world series right now ..

the one game national championship on CBS format .. pretty sure the 1988 CWS was just a straight double elimination tourney with one big bracket ..

ETA: i was off by one year .. in 1988, they went to the one game championship format with the two brackets ..

The 2 of 3 series is good in terms of competitiveness, and I am fine with it, but it is not fan friendly. They have spaced the games out so much that you have to take off a lot of work and spend a lot of money to see even a couple of games featuring your team. I love teh CWS - even went one year when LSU was not in it - but they are making it much less likely for me to go.

This times 1000. I went in 2009 and had to make two trips cause I just didn't want to stay and watch us beat up on Arky for one game. I saw the first two, missed the ARky game and was on a plane while the first game ended versus UT. I caught the last 2. My brother and I had a blast but it was a few bucks to do that.

they could tweak the format and cut it down to ending on sunday if they would play more than two games a day early on .. the way it was spread out in the early to mid 90s, you could easily win the thing with only two quality starting pitchers .. you had this intense endurance test in the regionals where you were you having to start one of your mid week guys in a key game .. then, omaha, where you could cruise with your two best pitchers provided you stayed in the winner's bracket ..

It's AA level baseball. Not really worth getting worked up over.

i think they have actually spread it out to the point where virtually two different sets of fans will attend ... early in the series and late in the series ... i am sure omaha actually loves this ..
this was going to be my point.

I went in 2009, but couldn't swing almost 2 weeks there. So, i opted for the championship series against Texas. Rolled into town Sunday and left Thursday morning to head home.

Going to Omaha to watch the Tigers is on my bucket list, but I now have revised it to just the first or second week. I would have to use just about every day of my vacation time to watch them the entire time.
