quote:I guess I just didnt see this vast improvement. He only played sparingly until this past year and was underwhelming imo. (So was AJ). I guess what I'm asking is what exactly do the Bears see in him? Do they think he can bulk up based on his frame, do they like his footwork and believe they can mold him, etc.. Does anyone have specific info or comments they may have heard?
He came in, got better over the years, and proved (at least to Chicago) that he is worthy of a high draft pick.
The SEC coaches or whoever votes on the SEC awards had AJ slighly ahead as well. AJ was 2nd Team ALL-SEC and Ego was honorable mention. Again, IM NOT SAYING AJ IS BETTER, I just dont have a good explanation for the disparity. Maybe its off the field issues like some posters mentioned. That would explain a lot more than, "Mick you're dumb".

Explain though, what do you see in his abilities? Specifics.
Well hes much bigger, he had a much better year last year, he actually improved during his college career, hes smart enough to pass a piss test at the combine.

An injury has to be the explanation to Freak's non-draft. I heard Zach's back problems were more of an issue to GM's than his off field stuff. Remember, Les Miles keeps all injuries hush, hush, so these kids could have injuries that are still healing from the season. Oh well, both will have to prove themselves once given the chance.

I BELIEVE THAT INTERVIEWS MIGHT BE HALF YOUR DRAFT STOCK !

quote:I agree this part. Freak had an additional 30 lbs on him until his Junior year and he did not carry it well. Bears are likely thinking Ego can handle some increased bulk.
For one, he's way bigger than Freak.
Or has a bigger frame to grow into at least.

Yep. And Ego really seemed to come on towards the end of the year. He was terrorizing folks in the Iowa game. And like others have said, Freak didn't seem to improve much throughout his career. I remember seeing him in the Oregon game and thinking how he would be the next Dorsey, maybe better. Some guys peak at 16/17 years old. It happens.
I doubt any of us are privy to specifics as to why Chicago was so high on Ego, I just think his ceiling is higher and hasn't been reached yet.

Ehh FSU DT Jernigan(sp?) fell to the 2nd after failing his test. Talent will usually outweigh a failed drug test.

Good thing people aren't drafted soley on stats

FWIW, the Bears seriously reached on Ego in the 2nd round. It was a major position need for them but Ego was drafted much higher than he graded.
Not surprised AJ didn't get drafted.

I doubt anybody here knows the true answer. Years back, I thought Al Woods was an average DT. He got a chance in the NFL. Look at James Wright. I can't remember any of his catches. But he was selected. There's more to it than on-the-field production.
Wright was drafted because hes great on special teams.

That's even more impressive considering he didn't play in that game.

You are correct, sir. I don't know why that popped in my head, but I do remember him coming on strong as the year progressed.

ps - He might be thinking of Loston. Was it Iowa or Arky game that Loston was all over the field?
