In this Gump's opinion the punishment is either to the lenient side or just right.

This man is old enough to have known better. His cop uncle probably helped him get away with lesser offenses for years and this guy never got a clue. Had he been 18, I may have looked at this differently.

This is disruptive to his life beyond the time spent in prison or bootcamp. And it should be...Had he gotten away with this one, who knows what he might have tried to pull next?

this shouldn't be the goal of justice. Justice is about getting a fair sentence for the crime.

the purpose of the sentencing is to also serve as a deterrent to prevent future crimes. you're not wrong, but its multi-faceted.

Seems like a stiff penalty and the judge must be nuts. I assume this guy will most likely be sacked from his job and live the rest of his days with a tainted reputation. A more reasonable punishment in my brain would be probation and have him reach into the old coin purse for a fine.

i know, it just isn't something I agree with

punishment doesn't seem close to fitting the crime. The victim here basically just got embarrassed, but he didn't really receive any physical harm.

The victim wasn't just embarrassed, he was defiled.
It's a harsh punishment, but it always sucks to be you when you're the example.

What's this? A Gump I can agree with?

IMO, the sentence was lenient. He should have been made to register as a sex offender. And he will be out before the 2013 season starts.

The purpose of the "sentence" is to correct the behavior. 2 years of worrying about being sexually assaulted in prison will do more for that a-hole's perspective of what constitutes a sexual crime than any fine ever could have.

From what his atty is saying, he's looking at 9 mths in the boot camp. I've had friends with kids sentenced there & it is not a lark by any means. What he has going for him is his age,he should be able to handle the mental stress of that envirionment ( most kids cann't ) but then, he was this same age when he pulled this highschool stunt. He has a one yr old son & according to his atty, he wanted to be able to drop him off at school, something a registered sex offender is not allowed to do as they are restricted to so many feet away from schools.

Glad that half is over, now the other half is all that remains.

Throwing out the lawsuit against the restaurant.

If you go to a low cost cheap joint like Krystal's you have no reasonable belief that you will be safe, because you know the employees make minimum wage. Let me repeat, you know the employees make minimum wage.

Downing's sentence is harsh but so were the Saints Bounty Program penalities. Sometimes, the judge has to make a statement and send a clear message.

I think Downing should have gotten a 1 year probation and been required to take a class or something. The guy was obviously out of his mind and was overjoyed about what went down during the BCSNC game. Any other guy doing that during Mardi Gras or Gay decadence gets a misdemenor or a slap on the wrist. I don't like Alabama football but 2 years in jail is a little over the top.

The terminology change in US academia from "penology" to "corrections" occurred in the 1950s and 1960s, and it was driven by a new philosophy emphasizing rehabilitation
