Our tailgates have evolved to go beyond just my friends and I and now we often have others from our major come and join. Because it can get rather large now we've been thinking about supplementing this with $5 wristbands to control who eats and drinks and to recoup some revenue. My feeling is this is technically against LSUs rules but I have another feeling that a lot of people do it anyway. Thoughts?

Jesus christ man, im at LSU with you now, and this whole wristband thing will cause you more headache than just asking the select group of friends with you that are setting it up to pitch in more.

So I have multiple tailgates I always go to and never have had wristbands because its tailgating and south LA, not some snobby ball or Oxford . Had to take a shot when I can, but seriously, im in a fraternity currently and nobody does this too much concern and effort, have my family tailgate I always frequent, law school tailgate, and other long time friends. The point of tailgating is friendship and having a good time, completely understand you are footing the bill for a lot of people you may or may not be close with, but at the end of the day its about having fun with your friends, and even friends of your friends. Trust me when I say, I have seen the wristband system, it causes way more trouble than its worth, and honestly it just comes off as kind of being a d-bag, btw you have every right and completely understand paying for what it seems like every person walking around to drink and eat, but in my experiences very very rarely do just absolute strangers just stop and mooch.

If you do, just remember its all about seeing the Tigers and having a good time, not even trying to blow smoke or put out some bs line.

I would like to reiterate that in a perfect world it would be rocking and free. But the reality is there is no tailgate without the friends of friends paying a cover charge. One day after college and I'm able to afford that, that'll be great. But right now it just has to happen because the other option is no tailgate. And that is not a viable option. Also I take exception to any comparison to us being like Oxford. We are a great group of guys (and ladies) and we get wild on Saturdays. Our proudest signature item of our tailgate is our massive "Geaux to Hell Ole Miss" banner we break out every other year.

Again im not trying to bust your balls as others have or will do on this sight, just simply giving you a perspective from a fellow Tiger currently in school and that has literally dealt with every type of tailgate atmosphere, and dealt with problems 10X larger than yours (its a pain in the arse ) wristbands will cause more issues than you know.

Also there is a tailgate without the friends of friends , you hundreds/thousands do it every gameday. Im not filthy rich, money is usually something almost every kid our age thinks about, but just trying to be helpful, get with your group of tight knit friends or people in your major, decide on what kind of tailgate you want, idk but judging by your age and the problems you guys are having maybe moving locations , but lastly and again simply the way I was raised, anyone that loves the P&G are welcome at my tent, and especially those that come and visit even if they root against our tigers. Again with fraternity and stuff its an obligation, not a choice, but if one beer, or one burger is given away (yeah I know it can turn into a lot if everybody gets one) its tailgating.

Also I love our tailgating experience compared to Oxford's, I went to hs in MS have enough friends it feels like a second school when I visit, I was merely pointing out at tailgating spots that are more uptight, wristbands are more common. Would not trade LSU's for any in the country. Personally feel, and some may argue, we have an incredible mix of all ages, socio-economic backgrounds, and the state as a whole, that come together. Other places around the country are not like this.

There's literally a 0% chance we'd ever turn somebody away. So in reality the wristbands may just be an indicator to the friends of friends to think "oh maybe I should chip in". Because we love having this tailgate for everybody. It just takes the capital to make it happen.

Hey man, I get you. My vision for the future does not include charging. But right now, we're in college. We don't exactly have all the capital right now to be at the level we want to be tailgating wise without trying to regain some of the losses week to week. And we only have 2 canopies (although one is a double). But we do have couches and satellite tv plus a pretty solid variety of food as well as a keg and usually jello shots or something similar.

Sounds like you need to get a new set of friends with some values. I go to a lot of tailgates and visit. I don't take anything unless offered. You will wind up fighting over fringe guests that someone runs off and someone else wanted them there. When you close off your function the party atomosphere will dry up and "others" will go elsewhere.

You somehow come off as an "entitled" know-it-all who rarely if ever, pays for anything with his OWN money...LOL
Just how much is your allowance ?

I don't know if the scene is being appropriately set. Any of the "fringe" guests, are in my major. Which only has 200 people and we're all in the same building so if I wanted to know who they are, I could extremely easily. There wouldn't be any fighting about who gets to stay and who gets to leave. My judgement in the matters of the tailgate are final. We've literally never kicked anyone out but if someone was being a complete arse then there wouldn't be any kind of dispute from other guests about making them leave and we would be able to find them in class on Monday and basically tell them to cut it out or not be invited again.

If your core group is the ones doing the inviting, can't you guys tell people, "we are hosting a tailgate. $5-$10 to enter for all you can eat and drink." Not sure why anyone would turn that down to be around people they want to hang out with.

I didn't go to LSU, but when I was in town for games and ran around with other college kids, I always offered someone $5-10. It was a small price to pay to have a good time and it was obvious the gesture was appreciated. If people don't like it, they can go tailgate somewhere else.

This is exactly what we do. Before we used the honor system and people just didn't chip in enough. We wouldn't turn people down but if we see someone without a wristband eating and drinking they'd be more easily able to identify and we could say "hey man would you mind chipping in $5 or something." We're not gonna start throwing people out for something like that. We're not heartless.

There is a much easier way to handle this then. You walk in to class on the first day, stand in the front and make an announcement that you'll be hosting the major's tailgate as usual but you can't foot the entire bill for 200 people. Unless the architecture program at LSU is full of complete assholes I'm guessing you'll have more than enough volunteers step up an offer to help. Word will trickle down and all will be good. Then the Tuesday before the JSU game make another announcement before class to remind everyone the first game is coming up and see where you are. If you need money or supplies just say it. If you don't have enough people willing to help out then you have your answer. You should then just worry about your core group and when the outsiders show up just have a bite of a big nice juicy burger and a cold beer and remind them that the world isn't full of free shite. Problem solved.

Lol. Basically our plan already. Biggest problem is Architecture isn't full of assholes. It's full of people who DGAF about sports. Our year is an anomaly in that the majority of us go to every football/baseball and most of the basketball games as well as follow gym and softball and the rest of it.
