Our tailgates have evolved to go beyond just my friends and I and now we often have others from our major come and join. Because it can get rather large now we've been thinking about supplementing this with $5 wristbands to control who eats and drinks and to recoup some revenue. My feeling is this is technically against LSUs rules but I have another feeling that a lot of people do it anyway. Thoughts?

We've done it in the past. No one has ever said a word to us.

Literally against everything tailgating stands for in my eyes. Our setup is modust compared to others though. Everyone either pitches in, offers or they don't get invited back.

I'm guessing this is more for a student tailgate.

Hey man, I get you. My vision for the future does not include charging. But right now, we're in college. We don't exactly have all the capital right now to be at the level we want to be tailgating wise without trying to regain some of the losses week to week. And we only have 2 canopies (although one is a double). But we do have couches and satellite tv plus a pretty solid variety of food as well as a keg and usually jello shots or something similar.

The group I tailgated with in 2012 did this. Everyone invited pitched in $20 and got a wristband. There was a bartender with an open bar though- so even in the spirit of giving it would be a little counter intuitive to just open that up to the public when the group all pitched in for an expensive selection of booze

How about you ask your deadbeat friends to chip in? I always gave (or at least offered) whoever's tailgate I was posting up at some money when I was in college. Sure, you may have a couple people passing by every so often and eating a little bit, but the majority of your people are there for most of the tailgate I assume.

Its not that simple. Im curious about the wristbands too. We have gotten to the point where there anywhere from 100-200 people at our tailgate at a given time. We ask people to chip in but a lot of "friends of friends" come. We dont turn anyone down but its gotten so big and expected that covering anywhere from 4-10 kegs plus food gets a little expensive

They do. They help front the keg and food each week and I keep the profits (which just get put into our general tailgate fund) because most of the "equipment" is my own. I'm taking by far the most losses but to me having a tailgate like this is something I thoroughly enjoy organizing and managing so I don't see it as me being taken advantage of. The biggest issue is it has now spread beyond just the 10-15 guys it originally was. Now friends of friends come and a good amount of other people from our major who hear about it. These are not people who I would consider part of the "official" group of tailgaters who make sure that food/utensils/alcohol is all accounted for the night before and who help set up and take down. The wristbands would be mainly for these types of people.

it probably is against the rules but your main problem will be if a minor gets a hold of a wristband and ABC wants to pursue it you have been contributing to the delinquency of a minor by selling to and allowing them to drink alcohol

I'm in college and currently host a tailgate with a few buddies.
Usually kill around 2 kegs and provide some sort of food.

We usually ask everyone to pitch in about $5 and nobody has a problem with it.
All you can eat/drink and we usually break about even.

ETA: we don't do the wristband thing though, people are usually kind enough to offer the $5 if they know the deal. You can recognize a rando that hasn't paid pretty easily.

This was our big worry. We are on the parade grounds where they like to nab underaged kids. Never messed with our tailgate, but we do have a college crowd.

We got to the point where we had to wrist bands and it lasted 2 years. It got to where the core group couldn't even enjoy ourselves because of all of the planning, set up, cooking, etc.
