Curley Hallman?

What does a search firm do to earn this?

I've never understood that either. I always thought it was because the firm can contact the coach and/or his agent without first contacting the school for permission first whereas the AD has to seek permission.

1. Look at Brett Farve tearing up the NFL
2. Recommend his college coach
3. "That'll be $800K please."
4. Profit

Curley Hallman?

That long ago? Highly unlikely...

No way, as we only paid Hallman near 500k

Joe Dean bragged about how he saved LSU 500k a year on Hallman as most top schools were near 1 million a year for the head coach.

Saved us 500k and lost millions on the long end.

Honestly, nothing that an AD can't do on his/her own, especially at the big time schools.

If you're being paid $900,000/year (Alleva's salary with incentives), you should be able to hire a competent coach on your own. If you can't, then we need to find a new AD before we hire a new coach.

Disclaimer: I'm not bashing Alleva, just using his figures.

It's almost as if those top brackets just circulate money between themselves. Astonishing.

Sadly, Joe Dean was so remarkably horrible that nobody would ever buy into his attempts to scapegoat anyone.

I think the search firm was used when they hired Dinardo. Gil Brandt who was the scouting guru for the Dallas Cowboys during the Landry years told Joe Dean it was a no brainer to hire Hallman. He had upset some big name programs but no one realized it was because of Favre.

Huh? 1mil a year didn't become the norm until post Saban's contract.

I think Dinardo got around $400k so Curley was quite a bit less than that. That's why the Saban contract was a shocker but it was Emmert not Dean that went all out.

Curley's total package was $235k and his buyout was $90k

An AD should always know who his next hire is in case his head coach is "hit by a bus". This is not necessary for a golf coach, but the head football coach? Hell yes.

Similarly, if I was AD I would insist that each of my coaches have their next OC and DC picked out already.

An AD who hires a search firm has already failed. And Joe Dean was a major idiot. Arrogant, too.
