Both are outstanding coaches who built their current programs from the ground up.

McDonnell did so under much more difficult circumstances, however. No doubt he’d build an absolute monster here.

I’d be thrilled with either candidate.

Why the love affair with McDonnell?
I don't get it.

Coached louisville, fricking lousiville, to omaha 5 times in 13 years. Made a super regional 8 of those 13 years. Made the tourney 12 of those 13 years, Finished 1st place 4 of the 6 years they were in the big east. Won the AAC the only year they were there. Won the ACC atlantic division 4 out of 5 tries.
And he’s one hell of a model american.

My first choice would be Jim Schlossnagle of TCU.
He's been to Omaha five times and his TCU team is currently ranked No. 3 in the country by D1 Baseball.

Some of his success right or wrong is being attributed to tony vitello. Also, he missed the tourney in 2013 and 2018, and almost missed it again in 2019. While i think he is a good candidate, his resume is lesser than someone like mcdonnell and osullivan. He also did has some private school built-in financial aid advantages at tcu that not many schools, including lsu have.

Not to mention geography advantages. You could build a top 10 roster and never recruit outside a 200 mile radius at tcu

TCU does not have anything even remotely close to what Vanderbilt has. They have been more like Tulane in that regard.

Now that they can stack need-based financial aid with academic aid and a portion of the 11.7 scholarships, things are probably easier for TCU. But if the FAFSA shows a family can afford to pay, say, $15K of the tuition, the kid isn't going to TCU -- his family is probably sending him to a state school.
Besides, Schlossnagle went to five College World Series without being able to stack types of aid.

Doesn't LSU still have the TOPS program?

You cited TCU missing the NCAA tournament in 2013. That was their first year in the Big 12. They made it to Omaha the next FOUR seasons in a row.

The fact that he's rebuilt his team and they're No. 3 this season -- ranked ahead of Louisville and Tennessee -- makes your weak argument even weaker.

Vitello wasn't the main reason behind TCU's success. There isn't a person in the Big 12 who would claim something as uninformed as that. TCU went to three more College World Series after Vitello (and every one of his recruits) were gone.

Didn't TCU whipping Mainieri's and LSU's butts in Omaha twice a few years ago show you guys anything?

Schlossnagle would be a home run hire for LSU.

Gimme a break. If you drew a 200 mile radius around TCU, you'd be smack dab in the middle of prime recruiting country for Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, Texas Tech and Oklahoma.

Schlossnagle has to recruit against those guys every year, and yet he's been to five College World Series in 11 years.

He's been able to recruit nationally because he has the kind of program that can. And he's a working coach, including during the summers -- unlike a certain head coach we have in Baton Rouge.

I just think he'd be the best candidate for the job.

This isn't true no matter how many times you say it.

You sure about that? Vitello left in 2013 and they went to Omaha the next four seasons. I would say at least 2 of those seasons were with players recruited when Vitello was the recruiting coordinator.

Schlossnagle is a good coach and would be happy if LSU got him. I think Vitello is a more realistic get of the two. Also I don’t know if I can handle another coaching tenure of LSU fans trying to spell a name correctly.

Better facilities? Look I know we love to hate on the new Box and from a fan experience it leaves a lot to be desired but from a players perspective LSU has either the best or right up there with the best in terms of facilities.

The pitcher that started against LSU in 2017 was one of Tony's recruits from St Louis.

Brian Howard - 3/3/2017

He was a senior and was in Vitello's last signing class at TCU.

Fun fact: Smoke Laval was offered the job and turned it down before Dan took it.

You just contradicted yourself in the quoted statements above.

they are all having good years, im definitely not gonna hire a coach for lsu based on one specific season, that would be shortsighted

Definitely my top choice, as well, but I have always heard he would be a tough pull
