Since all this Brett Farve stuff is going on in the NFL, I started thinking. And I had an epiphany. Curly Hallman coached a Brett Farve lead football club. That was why he was good at Southern Miss and sucked at LSU. Because he had Brett Farve.

Then I looked up his record at Southern Miss, and I see that he was only 23-12. His last two seasons going 5-6 and 8-4. Then I thought, why did they hire this guy? His resume at Southern Miss wasn't exceptional. I was only 13 when he was hired and I lived in Alabama at the time. So I don't know the other coaches that were interested in the job. Was there no one better or did this guy seem like a really good choice?

.....because our AD at the time proved to be one of the worst if not the worst we had in LSU history.......terrible leadership surround themselves with terrible coaching (starting with hiring an national employment agency to do the hiring).....quite simply "they" do not know any better

Didn't Spurrier interview for that same job and they turned him down?

No love for Curley? His heart was in the right place. He told the players to take off their jewelry and put it in a box and send it home to Mama.

He was a tool. He looked like a drunken fraternity guy on the sideline. I should know, I was drunk and dressed the same. God we were so lame.

I believe we hired three straight assclowns because we were too cheap and too dumb to go after high profile coaches.

Believe it or not, one of the more respected names in football, Gil Brandt of the Dallas Cowboys, said Hallman was an outstanding choice. I'm sure he lost some respect among most fans after history played out.

No, Spurrier was spurned for Archer-Another great move by the LSU AD. Joe Dean's coaching searches were like fishing for trophy bass by casting bait in a sewage ditch!

Curley was no good as a coach, but I still hold more of a grudge towards Lou Tepper.

They hired Curly because Joe Dean was a cheap arse, among other things I won't mention.

You are all right, Curley was a completely over his head clown, trying to coach here, and the idiot Dean who hired him was just as bad! You got it Puttytat!

No, that was when they hired Mike archer. They also interviewed Mike Shannahan before they hired Archer. Bill Arnsparger and the players had alot to do with Archer being hired. But Dean was the arse clown that brought in Hallman & Dinardo.

The players loved Archer. He also had the rep, at the time, of being one of the hot young coordinators in the country. The players barged into a BOS meeting and threatened to quit if Archer wasn't hired. The BOS caved and recommended Archer be hired.
Hallman had only a rep because of Favre and nothing else, except for really good taste in cheerleaders.
Dinardo started out well but got paranoid about the BOS wanting to get rid of him. He got rid of really good coordinators like Reese and got guys who were non entities who he could micromanage. You can't do that and run a program. Dinardo went down in flames almost overnight. Went from winning 9 games and looking pretty respectable to winning 4 and heading out the door in less than 2 seasons. That seemed to be a pattern with Dinardo. He was always looking over his shoulder after a couple of years no matter where he was and what kind of success he might have been having at the time.

Curley's first year at Southern Miss was 1988-Favre's second year there. He was actually recruited by Jim Carmody, who was let go after the '87 season.Hallman had never been a coordinator prior to his head gig at USM.

He did pretty well there. 10-2 his first year, losing season in '89,but upset Florida State in Jacksonville for one of the Seminole's two losses that year.

Still,Dean and Raycom (the search firm) made way too much out of USM's 1990 season. They did indeed have upsets of Alabama and Auburn and lost in the last minute in Athens. Not to take anything from Southern Miss' win(s),but hiring a guy off those were a mistake.Alabama had well over 500 yds in losing 27-24 in Stallings' and his new staff's first game togethor.'Bama had a ton of penalties and USM returned a fumble 75 yds for a td.

Auburn was still reeling from Florida just destroying them 48-7 the week before Southern Miss beat them 10-9 in mid Novemeber.A few weeks earlier,USL was flagged for pass interference as time expired giving USM one more play and they scored a winning td with no time left.

Again,no knock on Southern Miss' wins that season.Just there was enough to question how good a coach Hallman really was.
