don't you think that would give him more of a chance? more punt returns, opponents passing b/c they're behind, etc

It could, and I hope so but based on his performance against mediocre opponents last season, he doesn't seem to have huge games like he has against the quality opponents, for whatever reason.

There's still plenty of quality opponents on LSU's schedule to go around so it is of minor concern.

He is in the top 10. If he wants to go pro after this year he better bring it every game at whatever position Chavis puts him in and special teams.

This is the interesting thing about TM7. He brings so much to the table but when it comes time to talk about his potential in the NFL it gets little appreciation. I suppose he has a similarity to Tebow in this aspect. He will get drafted for his playmaking ability and intangibles. I for one think he has potential to be a top10 talent in any draft.

He's a great player, but shouldn't this go to Cannon? I mean, he's the only one to get the big trophy. I don't think he's the best football player in LSU history, but he is one of the greats IMO.

From an outside perspective he's already better than any LSU player I have seen(Peterson Faulk Dorsey Landry etc). With another season like last year he I can't imagine it would be even close.

My prediction is IF he makes it though the year without getting in trouble, he will not come close to what he did last season.

Dalton or Henry Thomas get my vote for best in LSU history. Still looking for that highlight tape of Dalton Hilliard that was shown on tv. Best tape EVER! I would really love for people that never saw Dalton play to get a chance. More moves than Shep but legs as big as Copelands. The first "Freak"!

Just 25 games into his career, Mathieu has already shattered the LSU record and tied the Southeastern Conference record with 12 forced fumbles.

That is an incredible stat.

Definitely. If he was 6-2 220lbs I think he would be a top 3 pick....or 1st #1 draft pick as a DB ever.

He's better than most DB's but.. something tells me, he may not be as good next year w/Claiborne gone. I think he got exposed a little in the BCS game last year. Of course, every team isn't going to have tall receivers like Bama did to go against him. TM7 is probably best as a punt returner.

The problem with that theory is that the Heisman Trophy is a popularity contest and it doesn't always go to the best player. It's usually given to the player with the gaudiest stats, who plays for a winning team and has a "Heisman moment". There are some Heisman Trophy winners that never even got drafted or played in the NFL. The NFL and College Football HOF's are full of player who never received a single Heisman vote. A great player who played on a lousy team, a team that didn't have a system that allowed a player to put up crazy stats or a deep team that just had so many weapons that they spread the ball around doesn't preclude that player from being great. A great offensive system can "produce" Heisman candidates. Not even a great defense can do that.

Cannon won the Heisman because he played offense, defense, punted and returned punts and kickoffs. Alot of people also felt that he deserved the Heisman the year before. Cannon's Heisman season stats were hardly spectacular - 604 yards rushing, 11 receptions and 6 total TDs. IMO TM's defensive and special teams stats are far more impressive...but it will be tough for a defensive player to win the Heisman unless he plays some offense and special teams AND still has great defensive stats. But not winning the Heisman should never be used in an argument measuring a players greatness. It's a bullshite award.

I agree that it is a popularity contest but every single Heisman finalist was a damn good football player. I find it hard to believe that any Heisman Trophy winner didn't get drafted unless they suffered some catastrophic career ending injury before the draft. Can you name any that didn't get drafted?

As for the OP, I think HB7 is definitely top 5 greatest tiger football players of all time.

Best play maker in lsu history? Sure Best player? No chance, he is pretty average in coverage. I think he is important to have on the field, but not the best every down/ situation player.

This myth that TM7 is jut average in cover needs to die. He is a really good cover corner. Every corner gets beat. PP got beat in coverage. Even Deon Sanders got beat. Poster say he was made to look bad on Jan.9th. He had 4 catches while he was defending. That hardly getting burnt.

People make mistakes. Why keep harping on that? The kid is a defensive player that makes game changing plays. Cannon's era was different. Would Cannon be successful in today's game? IMO No. Game is MUCH faster!
