it's not ruined, JJ just has to teach these guys how to defend. I watched a couple of games last week and it wasn't close to this bad

After seeing the reactions from the exhibition games and first games this weekend I read a lot about the topic and the varying opinions from basketball minds.
Ultimately they knew it would be a dramatic change, they were just tired of so many games going into halftime in the teens. By their words, Basketball was never intended to be a pure physical sport, but a sport that emphasizes athleticism and finesse. They know the first few weeks will be brutal but players will learn to adjust and play defense with their feet instead of their hands if they want to stay on the court. It's going to create more shots where the offensive player dictates the shot instead of the defensive player forcing him into a bad shot with his hands.
It is painful to watch, but it is going to get better with time, and hopefully the result will be a better overall product. I think we will see a lot of improvement between now and January personally.

It's one of the dumbest rule changes in recent memory. The impetus behind it was to increase offense. The problem is, the type of defense being played wasn't the issue. The issue is that so many of these guys cannot fricking shoot. Watch any CBB game and see just how many wide-open jumpers are badly missed. All this rule change is going to do is slow down games drastically, give underdogs even more of a shot because it will be easier to get an opponent's best player in foul trouble, and scoring won't increase nearly as much as they think. They tried to fix a problem (bad offense) by addressing something that wasn't the issue.

From one job-holder to another, the refs are itching to call every foul they can. Sometimes even before it happens. Hand check fest out there.

New emphasis this year on contact. No handchecking, forearms, etc. There have been a ton a fouls called in all the games so far this season and this game is no different. Hard to watch, but I think it'll produce better basketball once everyone adjusts to the new rule.

You can't move faster than the offense player to an extent they always have you beat, this rule means there is nothing you can do when the offensive player has a step on you and that you should just let him lay it up. Stupid if you ask me, I love the clawing the fighting the gnashing for points not points all around.

There's an emphasis on contact but there hasn't been contact on some of these calls.
Johnny didn't touch the guy on his 3rd. Stringer drew a foul and the whistle was blown before the Umass guy touched him.

I hope your right maybe I am just too quick to judge. I feel like this will also shift the recruiting dynamic by getting more laterally quick guys if you want better defense there will be a big emphasis on that attribute in the coming years.

To be fair, they're trying to transition to more NBA-like contact rules. In the past few seasons, the general consensus was that a big reason offense was down was because there was too much leeway in allowing defenders to use their hands on offensive players. This year there is an emphasis to put a stop to that with the idea to allow offensive players to move more freely, like they're allowed to do in the NBA. There's going to be a transition period as players have to learn (and coaches have to teach) to play defense without putting your hands on players. In the long run, it'll be great for the game. And not every game has been this bad at all. Stanford and BYU both went over 100 last night, and I am very confident in saying this is the first game that saw 34 fouls in the first half.
