yep. If it were me, or if my kid was a big-time recruit, no way would I do it like that. Simply sign the papers in private.
Or if the high school wanted to do a thing for multiple players that were getting scholarships, I'd at least sit at the table with my other teammates and simply announce, with no drama or spectacle, that I was signing with ________.
Simple, classy, unpretentious. But that's rare nowadays.

I'd have someone make a king cake, and decorate it with the colors of the three schools I was considering, then I'd let everyone get a slice, and then whichever color had the baby in it, would reveal which school. I would let the random person tell the media who I selected, all the while, I would've slipped out the back door to a private signing with my parents and coaches.

You're probably right, but this is the biggest day in a young kid's life. Let them have their moment in the spotlight. As long they are not degrading other schools when making their announcement, I don't have a problem with how they choose to announce their intentions.
With that said, sky diving is a bit much.

maybe it is ridiculous but you don't have to watch them. the kids seem to love it. they are just having fun and it appears they also have a personality.
