when are people going to start addressing the elephant in the room that JJ has had issues with his pitching coach every single year he has been here? every year the pitching coach has turned over so far. is he on track to do the same with yeskie?

Has he had issues with the pitching coaches, or has that been a Tiger Rant rumor based on fans being dissatisfied with the pitching performances? Both pitching coaches were hired to head coaching positions at FBS schools.

And every year, his pitching coaches have left for head coaching positions. It's not like he's running them off because they weren't getting the job done. It's the risk you take when you hire great assistants, you always have the risk of them being poached.

To be fair, his previous pitching coaches took head coaching jobs.
I'm not happy with the development of Hurd, but that seems to be a mental thing for him. I think we've otherwise done a nice job developing what we have. You can't make kids get ahead in counts or finish at bats or eliminate 2 out walks. You can preach it but the kids have to execute.
I don't disagree that Jay seems have had disconnect with all of his pitching coaches here. He's spent alot of time with Yeskie, though, so I don't know why he'd have brought him in if he knew they'd have differences in opinion/strategy, etc.

He went so far as to take pitch calling duties from Meatball and Wes. I don't think he's calling pitches for Yeskie, but he sure has taken almost all of the mound visits even when he's not changing pitchers.

Meatball is still my favorite. He did more with less than either of the two after him.
Yeskie has never really been touted as a short terms developer. He's always been more of long term guy.
That makes things difficult in year 1, and difficult in the portal age.
I think his pitch calling is very suspect, but that can come down to what they feel like the pitchers can execute.
I've already posted in another thread, but I've had questions about the way he handles a staff for a while now, going back to when he was at Arizona. Based on commentary from MLB prospect writers.

No way. Tried and true method of throwing an outside fastball with the infield shift on to induce what should be a groundball out, but usually turns into a dribbler 2 run single

I mean getting offers to coach Washington and Georgia is the good kind of turnover.
I dont think Yeskie is getting a HC job.

Did he not look at Yeskie’s history?

You mean the history of going to CWS 5 times and with 3 different programs (Arizona, Oregon St and A&M) ?
I'm not agreeing with the top guy, but Yeskie hasnt good output from a pitching staff since after 2019 at OSU.
He was mediocre to bad in 21, 22, 23 and now 24 throwing out the shortened covid 20 season. Admittedly the 21-23 pitching staffs werent NEAR this bad he had at Zona and A&M, but they did nothing notable.

Kelly went from here to be head coach at Washington
Johnson went from here to be head coach at UGA
These are called promotions

I do not see a problem with him being puzzled by the performance. That happens, he just need to get in there, figure it out and fix it. It just make take some time.

He basically coaches everything. He is the manager.
Posted on 4/8/24 at 4:27 pm to thunderbird1100
Once again, these coaches were leaving regardless whether they got a head coaching job or not.

I think he’s more puzzled with why guys like Hurd and Ack have 0 consistency after we’ve watched them pitch well.
To be fair, those guys had very little consistency last year.
The whole staff just went out of its mind in Omaha though.

yes and no
Ack was very good before he hurt his hamstring and then very good when he recovered
.
Hurd had started to be more reliable towards the end of the season last year.

Well what he said was that he was surprised that we don’t have other pitchers we can go to. He doesn’t coach the pitchers.
But he recruits them and assembles the team. The buck stops at JJ

Did we have the number 1 recruiting class and #1 transfer class?
So, what are saying? They're not getting coached up?

I’ll say from my perspective I honestly thought Hurd and Coleman would have the answers to our questions. I thought Hurd had turned the corner and that Coleman was on his way to be special. Neither has materialized. That is just a theory of mine.
