Everyone loves a winner.

In winter 1987, I covered a game in Lake Charles between Gulfport High School and Washington-Marion in the Popeyes Classic. This was, I think, the first year of the 3-point line in high schools. Maybe the second. Washington-Marion was reigning 3A state champion, having defeated the St. Thomas More team Lyle Mouton played for 50-49 in the championship game earlier that year. I think Gulfport was reigning 5A champion of Mississippi, but my memory is fuzzy about that.
Chris Jackson scored 55 points in the game, which was for the championship. The player guarding him, Randall Starland, was the state high jump champion. Jackson's between-the-legs-dribble, stop-and-pop jump shot was something Starland could never defend.
Here's the thing: Jackson made nine 3-point shots in the second quarter, including eight on consecutive trips down the floor. Fans, lined up four and five deep on that baseline at the St. Louis High School gym, took to raising their arms (signifying a 3) as soon as CJ crossed midcourt.
It remains the most amazing sustained performance I've ever seen in person at a basketball game. I saw Maravich on television, but never in person.
I had a VHS tape of the CJ game in Lake Charles and lent it to a co-worker, and I never saw it again. He swears he returned it, but ...
Jackson missed a dunk during the tournament, which he'd never done before, and his coach said "He'll practice that 200 times a day from now on." I'm sure he did. He famously shot hundreds of free throws every day, starting over when he'd miss. This was before we knew about his OCD issues and Tourette syndrome.
Anyway, I discovered this thread while surfing and wanted to share my memories of Jackson. Hope everyone is doing well.

I was there too. Was there for Shaq's 60+ game too.
Funny thing was when he was at 80% he was still faster than everyone else.

LSU needs to bring back the circle in the middle of the court with all the sec teams adding the ones that have been added since then of course.
Also the gold outlining of the court was very distinctive.
Now LSU bball is just plain.
We need to be reminded of the good years in times like this, and bringing back this old court would do that for many.
Maybe that would spark at least a little bit of interest if not nostslgia for the program and remind people of how it used to be.

Same here ... thanks Dad
CJ was special as well.
Had CJ kept up his freshman scoring pace and played 4 years he would have surpassed Pete's scoring record.
Is CJ still the highest scoring freshman ever in the NCAA.
I know at one time he had the most points from a freshman while Pete had the Soph, Jr and Sr record

One of the best ever in the SEC, but "Chris Jackson" and "Blessed" probably doesn't fit in the same sentence.

That was when LSU basketball was fun to watch. I never did figure that team out though, they beat UNLV and Marymount in arguably the best games in the PMAC, and never made much in the NCAA's. Utterly bizarre.

Watching that video, it still kills me that with all the talent we had back in those days with Jackson, Oneal, Roberts, Singleton, Simms, and Bordeaux....we never even made a real dent in the tournament. Should have won at least two or three in those years.
Shaq, cj and roberts played one year together and lost to a ga tech team that made the final 4 and had veteran players that went to the nba.

I hope we can bring back the Deaf Dome again! LSU Basketball is so much fun when we are good.

I was there. Great game!
LSU-Georgetown in the Dome
Georgetown was #2. #1 Illinios had already lost that week.

I was there on that day. A buddy of mine still has the VHS of that game. Everything you just described was a fact. Randall Starland jumped 7' 01" and was considered a great athlete. CJ's cross over killed him from about 30 feet away. What CJ did on that night was history. St. Louis gym was nuts and when he shot...the crowd said "whoop" cause it was automatic. Yes, he did miss one dunk.LOL!

I saw CJ play twice at LSU!
The Illinois game...he fouled out! (One of two games he fouled out in)
Auburn...I think the only game he scored less than double figures in...He had 9!
I did see him play a few times when he was with Denver. The first game he barley played and the second game he rocked.

I was there for many a game, including the Georgetown LSU game in the Dome. Hope we can return to that level of talent in my lifetime.
