Why aren't catchers better hitters? They should understand best what pitches are likely to be thrown in certain situations and they see every pitch and should be able to pick up spin, arm angles, etc really well.

By that logic, pitchers should be the best hitters.

But they don't really take BP so I don't include them.

It's just hard to find a guy who is great behind the dish & who can stroke. Coaches will sacrifice having a better hitter at that spot to have someone who is lights out behind the dish. If u find one who's both...then you got something

Guess I'm trying to figure what. Is it that good hitters get funneled to other positions? If so, why?

It's not hard to understand. If a guy can rake you'll find him a spot in the lineup even if he's not great defensively. But you're not gonna stick him at a position as critical defensively as catcher. You've got defensive spots in your lineup: C, SS, CF. And offensive spots- 1B, LF, etc.

They, like pitchers and some middle infielders, are often recruited with a priority on the defensive side of the game.

I remember the Astros moving biggio to prolong his career cause he could run and hit. Don't remember how good of a catcher he was though

Catchers spend less time in the cages and taking BP because they are working with the pitchers. They also start to get tired as the game progresses.

There's BP catchers that catch most pens. Pap isn't sacrificing time in the catch to catch some relievers bullpen.

Like the other guy said, you can't just throw a good hitter in at catcher because it's an important defensive position. It's had for a college to land an elite defending and hitting catcher because those guys end up first round picks. Every once and a while you get lucky and get a guy Like Scivicque that can do both.
