As noted, AC has no more loyalty to LSU than he does to MSU. He's a tulane boy & while he would be crazy to return there & probably won't, he's still wayyyy more tulane than LSU. He stays at MSU & he can build his own legacy. Here, he would be the 3rd great HC in LSU history. And I agree, too. Let's wait a few more yrs before proclaiming him the greatest. At this point in his career, he has exactly 2.5 years of college baseball coaching, .5 as a HC.

I personally thought Matt Riser was a no-brainer for Tulane.

He played for Tulane and has demonstrated continual success as a head coach at SLU which put him slightly above Cannizaro's qualifications at that time, IMO.

There must be some bad blood between Riser and the Tulane AD. It's the only logical explanation.

I have a lot of doubts about that.

you lost cred with me with this statement. you are favoring a non proven over PM. it's the "grass is always greener" syndrome.

If I were him, I'd try to schedule Tulane every year.

No one likes Starkville. NO ONE!

Not that he'll want to come back to LSU, but MSU will never be great in any sport for a reason... location.

Hahaha. Dude it's a college town with bars and hang outs just like most of the other college towns in the sec... AC is very capable of bringing moo u their very first NC.

We screwed up hiring CPM now we can't get rid of him. We saw the success of Notre Dame, but really UVA's coach was better than CPM. We hired the wrong Notre Dame coach.

Then we have the best assistant in America and now he's leading a team in our division.

Texas didn't want CPM, no one does. He's Les Miles.

People really and truly think like this? A coach gets all the blame when a team loses but gets no credit when they do well? How does that work? How do you say a hire was a mess up when that coach has won a NC? The same amount as the guy you say was the better coach. These are just some of my questions.

You must not have ever been there. It's nothing like BR, Gainsville, Athens, etc. Nothing... dude. And this isn't about AC's coaching capabilities. It's about how difficult it is to get multiple good players there.

This isn't the OT. We don't have to pretend like BR is the worst of everything.

Good post GT33. That guy you replied to has a long history of illogically criticizing Mainieri. It's his passion in life apparently.

No logical arguments or questions will influence his opinion.

When the Tigers are on a winning streak he disappears. When they lose, he's back. Very predictable.

Impressive but how many of these were impact guys?

2 of the 7 would have been the Sat. & Sun. starting pitchers. State's Sat. & Sun. pitchers are current SEC Batting Champ Mangum and 2nd string 1st baseman/DH Gordon. Both hadn't thrown a pitch in competition since high school two years ago.

And I'm not saying that he is the best coach out there, even tho I believe he is top 5, or that he doesn't have flaws but the people that refuse to admit he doesn't do anything right irritate me.

I have spent a good bit of time in Starkville as wells as BR and many other sec towns. As far as the ability to get enough good players, maybe you should look back at some of the recent classes they've had and compare some of the sucess. State has the capability to get good players like it or not. And will have an even high advantage once the new park is completed. I'm not saying AC is the super human but making a vague blanket statement like "they will never win a national title there" is uninformed. Granted they haven't yet but they definatly could.

Good thing is once PM is done here we'll have plenty of time to see what he did over there at an SEC team. If he continues with the current success and builds himself up, LSU would be dumb not to make an aggressive move to get him back.

AC kept the base from tulane in which he set the tulane stolen base record. It was in his office at LSU & no doubt is in his office in Starkville. He's tulane way before he's LSU.

They've been to the CWS 9 times in their history and only twice in the last 19 years. In those nine trips, they've won a total of 10 games. They've won only a game or less in 7 trips.

Not enough of them.

Well... they won't.

They'll get a couple good players every now and then. Clark is the most well known and just missed out on being recruited by Skip being from NOLA. Easley was a local guy they got to stay in state (like most good players they luck out on getting). Renfroe from Jackson... Stratton from Tupelo... Rooker is from TN but right on the Mississippi boarder.

A fella named Rafael Palmeiro played a little bit at State with Will Clark-- 1985 Team was pretty good but still finished 3rd in CWS.

Maybe that's Starkville's claim to fame...
