So you think my rationale for giving Pat Henry the salary he deserves implies I am fiscally liberal?

Shaver is about one thing, money in his pocket. He makes more training the pro athletes that what LSU pays him. Henry lets his former college pros train free in order to help boost recruiting. Shaver should never be mentioned in the same sentence with Henry. Henry is the master.

Hopefully Henry doesn't let Chavis coach the women's 800m. They usually hover around 2 minute times

I think Bobby Jindal should call Henry and tell him the future is bright.

I'm not sure Jindal has even been to LSU enough to know where the track is

LSU would probably have upwards of 55+ national titles by now.

Meh, if it's that easy for a coach to win a bunch of NC's then they seem a little hollow to me. Yes, it was cool to brag about to fans of other schools, but the handful of meets I've been to through the years weren't that well attended.

It seems to me that when this thread pops up every spring it's more about Bertman/LSU screwing up than reminiscing about the glory days of track and field.

Always cute when you grace the board with your ticket scalping presence. My opinion wasn't really far from the OP actually, but reading can be hard.

Way to share your opinion on the situation, oh wait...

LOL

Get this bullshite out of here. Of the current group of pros training at Lsu, how many pay shaver a dime? And give me a list of the pros training at Texas am right now.

Overpaying for WBB is absolutely absurd. When the comets win three titles in a row then go bankrupt a year after just shows how big of a waste it is.

Bankrupt a year later? Where'd you hear that?
The Comets won the championship in '97, '98, '99, 2000. The franchise was disbanded EIGHT YEARS later.

No sport is a "waste" if there are students who are participating in it, and fans / alumni who support it. College sports is not professional sports. There's merit to having sports on the campus aside from "how much money they make". It's amazing how many folks actually lose sight of that.

How Bertman let Henry walk out the door is one of the more mind numbing events in the history of LSU athletics.

How is it any more mind-numbing than when he let Saban walk out the door--without a buy-out clause yet?

The national name recognition LSU garnered and would've continued to garner with continued dominance in T&F; in PR terms, is worth millions of dollars. Greatly outweighs any monies spent to keep a coach and update facilities over time. Bertman let his ego get in the way of what would've been best for LSU.

This is the point that is CONSISTENTLY missed when these threads pop up every other month, on this board. This could be said for EVERY one of the sports the university sponsors that gets TV time.

In an ideal world, you're absolutely right. In today's environment with zero state money and LSU athletics donating millions back to the university, those non profit programs are gonna get hit.

Now, as already said, that wasn't really an issue back when Pat Henry left. You'd think LSU could have found a way to build a facility alongside the pmac to benefit the basketball, track, and gym teams at the time.

At least they have the old football facilities in the stadium now with the team out at the football ops

King Joey, there were "other factors involved", one being that Henry was sick & tired of being treated like a Third World Country by his own AD. He was quoted several times after leaving that as one example, when his team won its last NC, Skip didn't come down to his office to offer congrats till 4 days after the team returned to town. Bottom line, he & Skip did not get along, whether its origins came from contract negotiations or something else.I heard him speak at the end of the year Coachs' banquets several times, and he always opened with the comment: "I am very aware & very grateful that every home game in Tiger Stadium buys me a new javlin." Point being, he knew where his bread was buttered & had no issues with it. It was Skip being Skip The Penny Pinching AD who chased him away from LSU>
