My bigger issue is that Bertman decided allocating the money to our rug munching bitch who embarrassed the university was wiser than rewarding a coach who's brought so much recognition to the school. I understand WBB has the small potential to make a profit, but that was totally out of spite

eta: apologies in advance for the crude language, but I can'y stand Pokey Chatman and what she did to the program

I agree. His salary shouldn't have been the issue with the results he was getting

I think we're still paying too much for WBB

It's all relative. A "minor dust-up" bidding war over a great football coach could be millions of dollars over the life of a contract. A "knock-down drag-out" bidding war over a great track coach could be a couple of hundred thousand a year, plus a couple of million in facilities. That's pretty small potatoes in exchange for about a National Championship a year (which was Henry's pace, if I recall).

I don't mind paying what the market dictates for a good coach. However, even though I like a lot of what Alleva has done, the job security he gave Caldwell is kind of nuts.

I don't want LSU dropping 2 million to buyout the WBB coach, and I'll say that as a fan who respects the non revenue sports

Did you read what you responded to?

Yes. And there's nothing naive about thinking there could be some other factor(s) involved when the "bottom line" rationale clearly dictates the opposite decision from what was made. "Bottom line"-wise, keeping Henry at almost any price makes more sense than at least every single coach's salary outside of Miles, Mainieri, and Jones, and every dollar we spend on facilities for sports other than Football, Mens Basketball and Baseball. So unless Bertman was just dumb (which I seriously doubt), then there was most likely some other factors involved.

Nothing naive about that.

No kidding. Lsu doesn't even offer a track camp over the summer. Henry has one rolling though

Being good at track is cool and all (I guess)... But it's still just track. Let's not lose sight of what's important.

Personally I think track is one of the most exciting sports in existence. To each their own.

The one thing that Bertman couldn't offer Henry is this: Fans

Texas A&M regularly fills their stadium for track meets. LSU can't get 100 people to attend a track meet. Evidently, there's nothing to do in College Station except attend Aggie athletic events. I don't know if you've ever been to a track meet, but I'd rather sit in traffic than have to sit through a track meet; however, I do admire them for supporting their student athletes.

I hate to knock our fans, but I wish our fan base was just a little more like A&M's. Our football fans leave at halftime while theirs stay until the end. Hell, they put 40,000 fans in the stands for "Yell practice". While I think this is corny, it shows their passion for their school and their teams.

I've had football and baseball season tickets since I graduated in 90 and except for my deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, I've attended most every game and stayed until the end. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I think fans should support their team to the end and not bail on them at half time.

I'm sorry for getting off topic, but I just see us losing Henry because of a less than stellar fan base. I hope you don't mind my venting.

Overpaying for WBB is absolutely absurd. When the comets win three titles in a row then go bankrupt a year after just shows how big of a waste it is.

Vent away, not bothering me.

A&M fans are more passionate than LSU in non revenue sports, but this was about money and university commitment, not attendance. henry would have taken the Oregon or Arkansas offers at the time if that were the case.

you've obviously not been to their campus. Not a fan of the design of their buildings, but it is a very nice campus with incredible facilities. The money being poured into their athletic facilities is ridiculous.

love these threads

only time T&F is talked about here is:

- complaining about coaching

- for about a day after they win a national title

- during the Olympics

that is it. to say that our LSU fan base cares about T&F is quite disingenuous.

Fans leaving at halftime or slightly there after has nothing to do with how great of a fan base you do or do not have. Its has everything to do with the design of our campus and how much of a nightmare it is to get out after a game.

Personally, I stay for all the games but I cannot fault an adult who would like to be home prior to midnight. If we ever get the traffic situation solved then we would be in great shape.

Either 1. You don't know how to watch a track meet, or 2. They make it look so easy that you don't appreciate how difficult it is.

I've been a few times actually. You also have to remember I'm citing back 10 years when Henry left for A&M. The university's campus was one of the ugliest in the nation.

They're still a solid 10 years away from having what would be considered a beautiful campus, but i agree with you they do have some great buildings spread throughout campus

This says it all to me...

Pat Henry Career

This is just sad to me - you don't let this walk out the door - it was no brainier.

pretty much.

Again, I like Shaver and think he gets a lot of unwarranted hate by those who don't know anything about the sport. There's more parity than ever. In fact, Dennis Shaver led teams have beaten A&M at the NCAA's more seasons than you'd think. With that said, I think LSU can do better, but we could also do much, much worse. You can't fire a coach who consistently has LSU in the top 10 year in and year out. Also, LSU's men's team has been on the unfortunate end of injuries, players getting kicked off the team, and recently not benefiting from football recruiting like it did in the early 2000s

These recruits just see what each respective school invests into the university. That's why recruits don't flock to Notre Dame in football because of its history. The same principle applies for track. LSU has come a long way in the past 4 years with its facilities, but they pale in comparison to the likes of Oregon, arkansas, Kentucky, and A&M (especially when A&M builds its new outdoor track).

I agree with this, but I also think even casual fans have admiration and respect for the pride and recognition the program has brought to LSU. At least enough to justify a respectable raise for Henry while he was here
