If the NFL is their end goal, why should they not be encouraged to do what is best for their future?

How about finishing what they started in college first?
Especially in Hill's case, after Miles stuck his neck out for him.

I just don't fault kids for entering the draft if it's what is best for their future.

Finishing what? That's not how it works. The only way a coach can get a junior not to declare is by convincing them they will be drafted higher after next year. Hill has showcased everything he has and could blow out his knee on the first snap next season. It's not worth it to the player.

More wins in less time ever. He'll be LSU's winningest coach in 4 years.

Don't say LSU coaches itself, because he has more wins (less than 9 full seasons) than ALL the coaches from 1980 through 1994 (15 full seasons), inclusively. He has more bowl appearances and wins than any LSU coach except McClendon. He has more bowl wins than Bernie Moore had bowl appearances.

It is more than just wins and losses, but it is about wins and losses, as well.

He is 3 wins short from having more wins than Saban and Dietzel, combined (and they are 4 & 5 all-time, respectively).

Skill players are much easier to replace than lineman and line backers.
Qb is another issue

You will see a similarity to last year this season. Disgruntled talented players leaving earlier than they really should because they are not utilized correctly due to the ineptness of coaching. And, Les has to go for it to change. Welcome to mediocrity until then.

So those players got noticed by the nfl all on their own? Give me a fricking break. LSU made those kids dreams of playing in the nfl come true.

They left for the money, not because they werent being developed. If that were the case, then guys like shepard, Lee, and JJ wouldnt have stayed til their sr seasons.

Is this some sort of a white player joke? Im pretty sure Les gives advice thats in the best interest of his players. He has their back. Another reason why he does well in recruiting.

Taking off the P&G glasses, how many of them are truly ready for the NFL?

Hilliards not ready

OBJ and Hill need to go. They are ready

Landry is 50/50 to me on upgrading his stock, but he will go.
AJs need to stay and show better effort

Ego probably gone

we've reached the point in football that basketball hit a long time ago.

the "talented" players all left before their senior year, so there are never any seniors left for the draft. this opens up more spots for juniors and redshirt sophomores to go get big money.

nfl teams are going to grab the "talent", the guys with the physical characteristics and hope they can coach the rest. you can't teach speed, size and arm length.

it's still hard to fathom that they want to draft guys who aren't even that good in college. but if you look at it, you start to get the picture.

Well we do play 12-14 games a year now, when in the past it was 10-12 max. so the more wins in less time argument doesn't really work.

This the fundamental misunderstanding most college fans have. It doesn't matter if they're truly ready, it matters if they think they are and the NFL grade tells them they are.

Right now with the rookie wage cap, NFL teams don't have to spend money to take a chance on the second day players. They're more than willing to waste those picks if every three or four turns out a good player. The college players are more than willing to sign up, because they all believe they're Mingo and not Sam. The real money comes on the second contract, so why not start serving your sentence earlier. There's not much a college coach can do, aside from convincing a player he could jump to the first round next year and make more money.

Collins and Hilliard are the only ones out of that group staying for sure.
I would love for either OBJ or Landry to stay, but just not going happen.

On D we know Freak and Rasco are staying, but not 100% on Ego.

And you know how you get a second contract? By being taken in the first two rounds. Guys taken after the 3rd round face a huge uphill climb of getting a long enough look to even get a shot at real playing time, much less a second contract.

If you don't grade as round 2-3 round pick, you almost certainly are not going to get a second contract. Look at LSU's most recent class...

The guys taken in the first two rounds have been given every chance to succeed, and largely have. the round 3 guys have been a mix: Logan is now getting a starting shot 2/3 of the way through the season, Mathieu is in contention for ROY, and Montgomery has been cut and will likely never get another job in the NFL.

And if you weren't taken in the first three rounds? Simon hasn't played. Edwards is listed as inactive. Ware has played in two games and has 3 carries. None of those guys will likely see that second contract. And then there's another three guys who didn't even get drafted and won't even get a first contract.

Miles' pitch has to be: look at last year. If you go in the 3rd round, nothing is secure. If you go 4th or later, you are almost assured of not getting a fair chance to get a second contract. You'll be lucky to get your first.

If a team drafts you in the 4th round, They can replace you with a 4th rounder next year, which is essentially for free. The team does not value a 4th round pick, and you will not get much of a chance to even make the team, much less play.
