Can Les re-negotiate his buy-out terms so that both sides hedge?

Better way to phrase that would be.. how likely would it be?

A lesser amount that is guaranteed, no matter how much he makes in his future endeavors? From Les's perspective the stipulations of the buy-out disincentivizes him to work and it is a bargaining chip that other universities have on him when negotiating salaries.

From LSU's perspective it protects them from liability in the event that Les decides to work for free, on the cheap, or not at all.

Why? Do you think Les wants to sit on his arse? Do you think LSU wants to pay Les $15m to sit on his arse, if they don't have to?

How about $7.5m no matter what, instead?

IF Les Miles is bought out of his contract, I don't see him sitting on his arse. So I agree with you there. But he doesn't have to renegotiate to do that. He would probably land a sweet gig and get paid more big bucks. You might be worried about the buyout as an LSU fan, but I doubt he's concerned enough to renegotiate. He agreed to those terms in the first place because it's a good deal for him.

What incentive is there for Les to take less money?

If he makes $1.85m a year or more over the next 8 years, then he gets nothing from LSU. If he negotiates a deal with another team for $500k a year then LSU is on the hook for $1.35m/yr. I don't think he is allowed to officially retire and still get the payments.

In the grand scheme of things ~$1m/yr doesn't sound that bad, considering the cash rolling in to LSU if they get a good coach. $500k sounds even better though, so maybe its just the Jew in me always trying to squeeze every penny out of the deal. :)

I agree that if he can make more he will make more and let LSU off the hook. No reason not to try and get more from another university. I'm just not sure what he will fetch in the open market right now. If he's in the $1.85m range then he could help his new employers out by taking less money and then letting LSU pick up the tab for the rest but college football isn't a zero-sum game so that tactic may not make any sense at that level.

Lots of unknown future variables in the contract. Actual buyout number would be a lot less than $15 mil.

And LSU could definitely negotiate a different number with Les if he wants a lump sum payment instead of the monthly payments over 8 years.
