can he not pick up a few by running? Seems like on one of his sacks there was a pretty big opening.
that's just not his thing.

Well he takes care of the ball better than Flynn or Mauck

Matt Mauck==utility QB that came in and got the job done. Did not have "gaudy" type numbers often (he did set a season record for passing TD's) but made the plays at key times and kept mistakes to a minimum. This type of QB seems to work best with the type of offensive players LSU traditionally recruits.

Lee is becoming less of a game manager with each game.
I mean, it depends on what you mean by "game manager" but I think this article : LINK sets out a pretty convincing statistical case that Lee is the ultimate game manager. He's playing QB for a team with a hellacious defense and an extremely run-heavy offense (I was amazed to see that we run the ball over 40% of the time on passing downs). His yards per attempt and yards per completion are ok but not great, suggesting a QB who is throwing (and completing) high percentage passes far more than he's trying to make plays downfield. And his interception % and sack % are both shockingly low, meaning he avoids negative plays. To me these are all classic hallmarks of a "game manager."
More on point to OP, I suspect Lee has been told that no matter what you don't run. The risk of him getting hurt far outweighs the potential reward, given that Lee's not about to jet off on some Denard Robinsonesque 80 yard run anyway.

I suspect that Lee has been told by offensive coaches to tuck and run as an ultimate last resort.

basically that you minimize his arm as an actual weapon, just give him enough to keep the chains moving. Last game they started letting his arm become more of a weapon. It will be interesting if they keep this progression, because I think it will be needed as the season goes on, especially early in November

I hate when ppl say this. Mauck set the TD passing record, and put up a top 5 (maybe top 3) passing yd performance in 03.
he also turned the ball over a lot in our big games. I love the guy, think he was more of a playmaker than ppl give him credit for, but please stop saying he was some great (near )mistake-free game mgr/ offensive caretaker.

Right...Mauck threw an INT in the Florida loss that set the Gators up for a cheap TD or FG in that low scoring contest.
ALso, threw that pick six on the first or second play of the game in that epic Ole Miss game. (I believe it may have been stated after the fact he played this game with the flu)

Lee is not a polio victim nor is he made of glass.
He can and will run when necessary, far enough to get that crucial first down. But for now he's exhibiting the maturity and judgment not to run when he might be able to buy a little time and complete the pass.
I really liked the roll out right for the touchdown pass against WVU. I think more of that is in our playbook, but as usual Les is keeping under wraps all of the plays we don't need to use yet, waiting for a game against a fast, blitzing SEC defense to unleash Jarret "Jets" Lee on the world.
Until then,

Truth. LSU fans have collective amnesia regarding just how good some of those Jimbo Fisher offenses actually were. So many people seem to remember the 03 team as some 3 yards and a cloud of dust operation, but Clayton/Devery/Green was one hell of a wide receiving corps and they could stretch a defense.

Lee is the best quarterback in the SEC.
Posted on 9/27/11 at 4:16 pm to AlxTgr
The only time that Lee needs to be running is when it's towards the endzone after he's thrown a TD pass.
Posted on 9/27/11 at 4:16 pm to AlxTgr
I'm pretty sure he's being told not to run. Period. We cannot afford to lose him. Now if JJ were to make it back I could see the coaches let him take a few runs in big games

Is this a, he throws off his back foot type thread? Drew Brees is a classic example of the type of QB that Lee is. Brees constantly throws off his back foot and very seldom runs. That is not his forte. Peyton Manning hates to run. So what is the point of this thread exactly? JJ runs. Is this what you want for the team? If I am right, the coaches are utilizing Lee more and more and changing their original playbook to suit his skills. The older version of the playbook is still there. For those who enjoyed it.

Hmmm.... And yet Peyton got nowhere near the grief that JL gets on these boards . . .
I'd rather JL use his arm and head.

I believe he can, and there are going to be a few important plays where he's going to have to tuck it and run. I'm sure he's knows how to get down early and not let the defense get an easy shot at him.

Here we GEAUX! That's what I'm talking about. Seems a bit absurd but wouldn't it be almost poetic justice and "truth in life" to have JJ relieving JL this season. We get near the goal line and bring in JJ (from time to time). It would be similar to the wildcat w Ware - only better. I like the idea of having a QB that can run in college football vs a "running" QB.
However, let's keep in mind that Boise State, Oklahoma, LSU, Alabama, and Stanford are the top teams in college football after 1/4 of the season. None of those guys are considered running QB's although Luck is a good runner.
We CAN win w/o a running QB but I like the optinon of another threat in the backfield when we are in the red zone trying to score a six-pack!
