I don't know what the rule is--if he doesn't play at all this year can he go into 2017 as a redshirt junior? I'm good with Harris for the next 2 years, but Etling is good enough to start at least 1 season while he's still here.

Why? Even if he's a back-up, he made the choice himself. He knew the lay of the land before coming here. It will be nice to have a decent backup QB to Harris that appears to be able to step in and take the reins if Harris were to get hobbled.

He could apply for a 6th year and would need NCAA approval like Dillon Gordon.

You have to miss 2 years to injury to get a 6th year. Gordon is different since he only was on the team for 4 years. He's basically applying for a medical redshirt to get a 5th year and technically he doesn't qualify since he played during the last half of the year. They might give him consideration since it was just one play though.

Gordon started the first two games. He was injured. Don't remember if he got hurt in second game or in practice leading up to third game.

He returned and started the UF game which was the sixth of the season. He never played another snap.

If the bowl games counts in this situation he didn't actually play during the second half of the season.
