Have you ever sat by the opponents bullpens? Ever been in ear shot of the comments to the opposing teams left and right fielders? It's not all "back slaps" and "well wishes". And you know what, it adds to the atmosphere. It makes it fun. I have never read a quote from an opponent, or an LSU player on the road for that matter, saying that the fans were rude to them. Well, I guess Joey Belle felt someone at Dudy Noble crossed the line, but other than him...

I sat out there last year, and I laughed at the fans every time. They would heckle everything the outfielder would do.

I agree. The players get a laugh from it. The surrounding fans get a laugh. It is part of enjoying the game in different ways. Assuming the heckling is done in jest.

I just get the feeling that some of these Alex Box patrons do the right thing ONLY because they hope somebody is watching.

I sat on the front row right behind the bench in the opponents bullpen with my dad for about 8-9 years. They heckled the guys constantly but never said anything that crossed the line or got personal. Occasionally, some of the clever players for opposing teams would shoot something back that was pretty funny.
I've told this story on here before but I feel this is an appropriate time to insert it. There was a catcher for one of the opposing teams that wore this big glove underneath his catcher's mitt. It looks like a big gardening glove or something. There was this guy about 7-8 rows behind us that ALWAYS gave the guys in the bullpen a good laugh with his heckling. He asked him if that glove was for when he rode bulls. The catcher looked up without missing a beat and said "No, it's for when I ride your mother". The whole section erupted in laughter. It was great.

I enjoy hearing nice things said about our team, program, fans, and stadium. I wouldn't say I seek them out but it's nice to see and hear. It garners respect on a level beyond the performance on the field.
There you go. Not everyone does things for the attention.

I personally know a guy who thinks he is a big fricking deal because he cooks food and opposing teams come by to eat. If you want to do it, great. But the stories get old after like, say, 2 minutes. It's what defines the guy in the world, I guess.

I was in the right field bleachers in the 1994 Baton Rouge regional when USC had a right fielder named Jacque Jones.
The right field fans rode his arse hard. When Jones batted for his first at bat, he hit a two-run home run. When he returned to right field after that, the fans there were telling him "You were lucky! Even a blind hog finds an acorn now and then!" Jones never acknowledged the catcalls.
The next time Jones came to bat he hit another two-run home run. When he came back to his position after that half inning, the fans really got on him. "You used up all your luck now, son! You'll never hit another home run in your life!" Again, Jones ignored them.
His next at bat he hit ANOTHER two-run home run.
When he returned to his position in right field, the entire bleacher crew gave him a standing ovation. The kid grinned wide and tipped his hat to the fans. THAT is showing respect between good fans and an opposing player.
LSU won that game 12-10 to return to Omaha. Todd Walker was the MVP of that regional.
Jones went on to play in the major leagues for several years.

Additionally, What were the quotes in the Los Angeles paper the next morning? What did ESPN say about it? The answer is nothing. Fans did it not expecting anything in return.

Yes...this...all of it. You have put into words what I have been thinking.
I agree with the phenomenon as you explain it. I would love for some psychologist to describe why this happens. Is it because our state is so shitty and this is the only good media we get, so we go all out to glorify it more??
