Brian Kelly says NIL has turned into a runaway train.

My exact thoughts and he is right.

"This has turned into a runaway train that has moved well past a student-athlete and is moving too fast toward a professional contract," Kelly said. "I don’t think that’s what the intention was. So we’re going to need some guidelines here before this gets thrown into Congress."
"I don’t think they want contracts," Kelly said. "I don’t think they want to be traded. I’m sure they don’t want to be cut. I’m sure they’re not going to like getting a call at 3 p.m. in the afternoon saying, ‘Hey, I don’t know but we traded you today to St. Bonaventure. Oh they don’t have a football team.’”
"Because if we go down that road, aren’t they really professionals?" Kelly said. "I’m a professional. I’m a professional in that respect. They’re student-athletes."

Well no shite. College football is now a joke.

He later clarified his comments, noting "Wrong way on a one way track. Seems like I should be getting somewhere. Somehow, I'm neither here nor there."

This is the only thing I somewhat disagree with Kelly on. The only reason the players are "student-athletes" is because the rules artificially keep them as such. In every other aspect major college football is very much "professional". The coaches have multi-million dollar contracts. The schools charge significant prices for tickets, and many have very high priced luxury suites.
The conferences have multi-million/billion dollar media contracts to broadcast the games. The schools have licensing agreement to allow others sell apparel...including jerseys of star players (only leaving out the last names on the back).
The schools, coaches, conferences are earning a ton of money. The only people getting largely shut out are the players...unless they can negotiate their own NIL deal.
The NCAA refused to acknowledge that major college football and basketball were more "entertainment business" than "scholastic extra-curricular activity" all the way until the point were the USSC found it was unconstitutional to prohibit the players from earning money off use of their NIL. That, coupled with the one-free-transfer rule, opened the floodgates to unrestrained "free agency".
But Kelly is right in the sense that if we are going to allow essentially unrestrained free agency then rules and contracts are needed to establish some degree of order. Otherwise, top recruits will just go to schools that offer them the highest amount only to then be able to use the leverage of the one-free-transfer rule to "renegotiate" their current deal, or seek a new "deal" with another team.

Well this is an interesting take.

Because these student athletes want to be paid and treated like pros, schools should be able to trade them to other schools even without their consent, like pro players. Even during mid-season. Only seems fair that a kid can leave a school for a better offer that the school can trade a kid for a better player.

Runaway train never going back
Runaway train tearing up the track.

Yeah, no shite. Anybody with a brain knew what this was going to turn into. Cats out of the bag now though, pandora does not go back in the box.

You are dumb.
Professional athletes have contracts, they can't just screw around their organization every few months or bolt.
These coaches that you act like have been doing what players are doing now have NEVER acted this way. They have buyouts and contracts. Sure they bolt and move all the time but it cost millions of dollars in buyouts. Players it cost nothing but some time tampering and fishing with a handler for the best offer.
Teams have salary caps in the NFL so it levels the playing field.
Right now in CFB we have free agency with no contracts, and no salary cap so rich schools can buy anyone they want at any time.
NOBODY is against NIL or players getting paid. We are just against stupid people like you that think allowing this thing to run like the wild isn't going to destroy the sport.
In reality the SEC is just going to have to flex and enforce some rules on their members and other conferences follow suit. Otherwise kiss college football as you know it goodbye.

I see this going only a couple ways.
CFB as we know it will completely collapse because only 1-3 schools with unlimited funding will rule everything. Every school not in that club will try to compete but will never get over the hump because those schools have all the best players.
Congress passes some sort of legislation that muddies the waters and cools off the NIL market a bit.
Either way what we have now is not sustainable. We can’t expect our biggest donors to shell out millions a year to kids with absolutely nothing in return. Atleast donating to TAF is a write off and it comes with tickets and possible upgrades to the school.
Giving money to a kid who can leave on a whim is a farce and we will have to see it play out before it gets better.

It’s a shame Texas A&M had to cheat to try and become relevant in football.

Most schools lose money on football. All schools lose money on sports.
There's nothing wrong with an established player making money off his name, that's not what is happening in college football.

Opposed to student athletes who want millions to play a sport while being a student?
So the beef is with the coaches making too much money at work? A salary to perform a professional job, that they earned by working their way up. A career as one would call it.
NIL is for Name Image Likeness, if a company uses it for profit. Student Athletes should absolutely be entitled to a percentage of that money.
Not a million dollars to sign a LOI to attend school.
You are a complete moron and part of the cry baby culture that started this mess.

LSU football 2019 - the last real championship in college sports of any consequence until the end of time.
Everything after will be tainted by COVID, unlimited transfer/opt outs and NIL.
I actually knew what was going down at the time and it felt great.
