He needs to get the ball out quickly & throw to a spot. He needs to 1, 2, 3 and throw. Do not hold the ball develope a rhythm with his receivers. It looks like he can make all the throws strong arm. What yall think?

I think he should listen to THIS board and forget what the experts at the camps tell him.

From the Auburn game, his pocket presence was horrible and he needs to hit the WR, not throw it 3 yards above their head.

Not sure that he needs to get it out quickly, Dural and Dupree stretch the field so if anything he'll be in the pocket and holding onto the ball longer.

His mechanics and calmness in the pocket were bad last year. His throwing motion and ability to read defenses should have improved a lot but we'll have to see his composure in a game first. If this O-line is better at pass pro we'll have a great offense

He's not the one who holds onto the ball until there's nothing left to do but spike it into the ground or take a big sack. If anything, Harris leaves the pocket too early and looks to run. You're talking about the other QB.

I think what you are trying to say is that he needs to anticipate the throw and get the ball out on time.

quote:

Do not hold the ball

Harris has one major flaw right now. He leaves the pocket too early. You are right that holding the ball too long is also a problem, but Harris is on the other end of the spectrum. Jennings holds the ball in the pocket too long too often.

quote:

It looks like he can make all the throws strong arm.

He can. The hope (for this year) is that the game starts to slow down a bit for him. His arm is strong enough that he can take a deep drop and still make the throws. Our successful QBs could all do that (Davey, Russell, Mettenberger). Oddly enough, anticipation is less necessary if he can learn to sit in the pocket on a 7 step drop and deliver the ball with rushers in his face. I think it's a lot to ask for a 2nd year QB to be throwing the ball on time with anticipation consistently.

Uncle Rico was deadly accurate with a ribeye and could throw a football over some mountains.

Carry on

i'm not a QB coach. and neither are you.

I see very successful QB's actually hold the ball longer than 1,2,3. you know, roll out and find an open receiver, step up in the pocket, etc, etc

That's not what he's talking about. He's talking about getting rid of the ball wants he starts his throwing motion. Be quicker in getting rid of the ball once he starts to throw so his passes aren't telegraphed to the defense. A quick throwing motion is greatly desired in qbs

3 Step Drop = Quickest passing drop; deep designed routes, excluding nine routes (also known as 'go' routes) will usually be around 15 to 20 yards downfield. A 3 step drop is about 1.5 strides time to getting the ball out, and should be 2 to 3 seconds if play is properly executed.

5 Step Drops = Moderate passing drop; designed routes, aside from nine routes and go routes, will be 25-35 yards. QB will drop three full strides and then take a step to collect his momentum before he throws. This will help him push the ball downfield. Ball should be out in 3 to 4 seconds.

7 Step drops = Deepest passing drop; designed routes will mostly be 20+ yards, with the deepest being 35+ yards. The QB will take five full strides and step to bring his momentum forward for his throw. This play takes the longest to develop, but the ball should be out at around 4 to 5 seconds.

Agreed! Throw to spots and receivers will go get the ball.
