Bowl selection process

With the season starting to take shape, and with bowl projection threads beginning to make an appearance, I thought it would be good to have a thread to show everyone how the bowl selection process will work this year with the new college playoff. It is not about making projections (although that is certainly welcome), it's just about explaining the process for reference in future bowl projection threads.
Major changes:
1. The Chick-fil-a Peach bowl and Cotton bowl are no longer "SEC" bowls, they are now part of the semifinal rotation along with the former BCS bowls as the top 6 bowl games.
2. There is no limit on the number of conference teams in the top 6 bowl games (including the 2 semifinalists).
3. (From wikipedia) If the Big Ten or SEC champion is available for a non-playoff bowl in a year when the Rose and Sugar Bowls are hosting semifinals, that team will appear in either the Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, or Peach Bowl, but not the Orange Bowl.
4. (From wikipedia) In the Orange Bowl, the SEC and Big Ten are guaranteed at least three appearances during the eight non-playoff years.
5. The committee, not the conferences, will decide the match ups for the top 6 bowls as long as it works with the conference tie ins.
So with that, this is the SEC bowl pecking order.
1. Top 6 bowls (Sugar in New Orleans, Orange in Miami, Cotton in Dallas, Peach in Atlanta, Fiesta in Arizona, Rose in California.)
2. Citrus (formerly known as Capitol One. Not to be confused with the current and newly named "Capitol One Orange Bowl" that is a top 6 bowl.) bowl vs. Big Ten or ACC. In Orlando Dec. 31 7pm ESPN.
3-8 is different this year, in that the SEC will decide along with the schools and bowl committees which teams will go where based on match ups, geography, bowl prestige, etc. There is no true "order" of hierarchy for these bowl games. This is different from where the bowls had complete say.
A. Outback Bowl vs Big Ten. In Tampa Jan 1 11am ESPN 2.
B. Music City Bowl vs ACC or Big Ten in Nashville Dec 30th 2pm ESPN.
C. Gator Bowl (Tax Slayer) vs ACC or Big Ten in Jacksonville Jan 2 2:20pm ESPN
D. Liberty Bowl vs Big 12 in Memphis Dec 29 1pm ESPN.
E. Texas Bowl vs Big 12 in Houston Dec 29 8pm ESPN
F. Belk Bowl vs ACC in Charlotte Dec 30 5:30pm ESPN
Teams for bowl 9 and 10 are picked by the bowl committees.
9. Birmingham Bowl in Birmingham vs Undecided conference Jan 3 Noon on ESPN or ESPN2.
10. Duck Commander Independence Bowl in Shreveport Dec 27 2:30 ABC

In short, it's a clusterfrick.

Exactly, I tried to spell it out as clear as I could.

Due to my selfishness, I hope this is the selected bowl. I'm traveling after Christmas and this is the only agreeable time.
Seriously, there are gonna be some confused people in early December.

Shouldn't the Citrus Bowl (Formerly Capital One) be included with the 3-8 bowls which are decided by the SEC, schools and Bowl selection committees?

the SEC will decide
Here's the part I don't like. Based on the SEC HQ history their top priorities will be to take care of 1) what's best for the University of Alabama; 2) what's best for the state of Alabama; 3) what's best for Auburn University; 4) money

I thought so too, but according to the article I linked, it's not.

As long as we never have to go to that damn chicken bowl in Atlanta ever again, I'm happy with wherever we go.
Would be nice to roadtrip to Memphis or Nashville.

How are the bowl payouts divided? Same as before?

I would assume so, but I don't have anything in writing to back that up.

both the sugar & rose host the playoff games , this year - thus the sugar could have other teams play in the game, rather than sec team , as is with the rose
the championship game will be played in jerry world
no way, there is a 12 team playoff!!!!!!!!

How about in those years when the Chicken Bowl is part of the playoff? Still don't want to play in it?

I'm OK with playing in the SEC Championship game or a playoff in Atlanta, but no more Chicken Bowls ever again, please. We've done that one too much already. There are other bowls I'd like to see us give a try.

When the chicken bowl is a semifinal, the Fiesta bowl will also be one.

Thanks for laying it out. I'm sure this will get asked many times over the next few weeks.
