Looking back at yesterdays game, there were numerous blown coverages that cost the defense dearly yesterday. It seemed to happen most while LSU was in zone coverage, and the biggest culprit was Deion Jones.

On two huge plays, he simply let the guy he was supposed to cover run free and it was just a matter of poor recognition.

Jones is a great player, but he's a boom or bust type player on any given play. Although, thankfully, he's been booming more than busting most games.

On Jefferson's blown coverage, he saw Harris scrambling and for a split second left his man and then couldn't recover in time resulting in a huge play before half.

If LSU can clean up those plays, their defense could be very scary, but until they prove it, this secondary is very worrisome.

Agreed, but watch out for the down votes from people who "watch the games".

It's so obvious that we have to get better there and in special teams if we are going to achieve the potential that this team has, but we beat Florida with a fake field goal, so "we goin to the ship"... And can't be stopped

Yeah that was just a bad angle taken by Jefferson. Gotta be better than that.

I'll have to go back and look at it, but on the wheel route to the TE for the touchdown (or maybe it was the long pass) it looked like LSU was in quarters and Tre White got sucked inside by the post route leaving the wheel wide open.

I really don't get playing a complicated coverage scheme when you have horses like we do. it should be mostly man considering how good our dbs are.

It's all about confusion. A QB panics when he doesnt know what scheme the defense is playing. With our disruptive d-line and these different looks, it's also hard for opposing coaches to game plan because they dont know what we can/will run.

Keep in mind that under Chavis about the only zone we played was our prevent, which wasn't pretty. Most of the time we went man-to-man. While normally this is quite effective for us, it has always made us susceptible to scrambling QBs. With Steel employing zone more regularly, our team is practically learning how to play it from scratch. And I think they are showing improvement (they weren't that tight against MSU). If we can clean things up it should make our pass defense downright scary. We might give up a few yards (mostly underneath), but with our players watching the QB we should be able to get more turnovers.

It clearly isn't working to confuse the offenses, because they are getting tons of completions off of it and in many cases points because our defense is clearly confused themselves.

We played more zone than you realize the last two years, and in most cases it was a disaster. Chavis also pulled back on the pass rush to try and deal with scrambling QBs, and that failed miserably multiple times last season.

Zone is run when you lack physical talent in your players, yet LSU doesn't have that issue at all. It's been an issue all season and isn't something hard to figure out.

Our players are definitely watching the QB and that is why they are getting burned. They are letting guys go and UF figured out to just flood two receivers into a zone because LSU's DBs and LBers have no idea what to do when that happens. They stay focused on their zone and assume their teammate has it covered.

Man to man press coverage with the DBs is what they need to do.

While our DLine played fantastically most of the game, you see zone, especially ours break down when Treon got time by scrambling out. Zone requires quick pass rush because there are already holes in the zone.

Was Jones the guy who was supposed to be covering Jake McGee on both of the touchdowns he scored? The first one was a great catch but McGee was wide open the 2nd time.

It seemed like the defense was more in tune when mills was in the game. Him being back will be huge going forward. end of the first half and I think he only played the last couple drives of the game after that.

I get the purpose of doing it but not when you have the beast that we have on d. you lock down the corners with man and let the safeties help over the top

Tired narrative.
We could've beat UF with the FG. Fake not necessary and just a dab of Miles icing on cake. :gea uxtigers:

Jefferson had his worst game as a Tiger by far. Tolliver continues to struggle imo but I know he's getting better and will be a stud. Even with the blown coverages and poor DB play, we still beat a really good team. Florida is damn good.

Well frick. If this is him struggling then this kid will make everyone forget about Patrick Peterson. The kid has been really really good.

Have you checked our depth chart lately? We have a very good to great starting unit, but there is a steep drop off to some of the reserves in the secondary. Why do you think we are starting a true freshman at CB? Man is more physically taxing on the secondary.

I prefer man myself, but when a secondary gets to the point where they can disguise coverages and blitzes, a QB has to really know how to read and be accurate to beat it. If they can get rid of the busts, it could be a big advantage down the road.

For the short term, if the busts keep happening, I hope they will dial the difficulty back and go with more man to play to the secondary's advantage down the stretch.

This week's game is a big deal in that regard. If the secondary cleans up the mistakes from UF and has a great game against a good passing team, then they will have the open date to go back and work the details before Bama. If they get torched.....

Arden Key was supposed to drop back in coverage (I guess it was a zone blitz) on one of those big plays to the TE. He dropped back, looked confused, and let his man go. Freshman mistake. That was a tough spot to put him in. Most DE's are not going to be used to playing zone pass coverage right out of high school.
