While everything he said is honest, I question the motivation provided by tellin your guys I'm bringing your replacement next year. I love Blake but man next year is next year worry bout that in the fall. Next year ain't gonna bring shite this year. I'm not privy to the plan but I gotta believe you coach em up not coach em out

He's got an older team with guys he doesn't want to get complacent thinking they don't have to keep improving to start at UNO. He's creating a culture and part of it is being honest about the future and his plan to make it better so they buy in. Pretty smart.

He was coaching them up all game. After is when he let them have it a little.

ETA: 17 upper classmen; 4 freshman.

Impressive. The only thing I didn't like was his post game speech. Too hard on an overmatched team that hung in there.

tough love, he probably didnt mean all of that, but they'll take it personally and get better.

Nothing he said was wrong. Not nearly as bad as PM constantly pushing his guys under the bus.

Eh, there's a difference there. PM can say what he wants directly to his team and so can Blake. That's whether this was mic'd up or not. Where PM gets that rep is when he talks to the media.

Blake knew he was mic'd up for the media, so is it really all that different in this case?

No. Not all that different. He wasn't calling out a single player though. And it probably wouldn't have been a different speech or tone had he not been mic'd which was my point. He's got just 26 players on the roster only 15 of which are position players. Few of them if any will feel like their starting spot is in jeopardy this year. So he's pressing upon them that while they may get a pass this year, what he asks for (effort) will play into next years team as well.

You beat me to it. If anything what Blake said was more humiliating to his players than anything Mainieri has ever said to the media.

What? Which specific player did Dean throw under the bus? Was he talking to the media or his players? You think he should change what he says and does due to that mic?

To be fair, Mainieri doesn't hold back when a mic is on either... Hence the whole "throwing players under the bus" thing.

For the record, though, nothing wrong with what Dean said.

That's what I'm saying. Mic'd or not during a game, I don't expect coaches to change anything. I'm fine with PM doing it. I'm obviously fine with Blake. PM's rep comes from interviews directly with the media where he's open to saying specifics. Some people like it and I'm even fine with it to an extent. I only said where PM gets his rep from. Wasn't even criticizing it really. But to say this is as worse and more humiliating than anything PM has said.... Come on. Just last summer he's quoted as saying he wishes someone would start ahead of Poche and push him to Game 3

When the hire was announced, I thought it was a terrible career move for him. Not only was he just two years removed from being an undergrad assistant at LSU, but with all the shite that UNO's program had gone through over the last 5 years, it just seemed like a potential black hole that would eat an inexperienced guy like him alive.

It's still way early, but he has that team looking like a darkhorse to finish at the top of the SLC.

You had to go back 3 years before you even joined TD to try and find a quote by Mainieri, almost SIX years ago, to prove your point yet the majority of posters in the thread agreed with PM?!?!

And Maienieri didn't name a player in his quoted comment which seems to be your definition of throwing a player under the bus.

Your hatred of Mainieri becomes more and more evident, to the point where you're losing rationality.
