No doubt, Doc. Truthfully, if Belle wasn't such a head case, there would be no argument about 'best baseball player ever.' He would have had more at bats and bigger numbers than Walker. He'd also be a shoe in for the Hall of Fame.

Remember the first time I saw Todd Walker as a kid in the Dome 93. The Tigers in pin stripes and to me it was like seeing the Yankees and Todd Walker was Mantle. Big Ben was also a larger than life figure for an 8 year old. Saw him pitch against State. There are more but those 2 always stick out. It was an amazing time to be a kid who loved baseball.

Just looking briefly at pitchers who actually made it to the CWS from 1986 to 1992, rather than the small fry guys, you have...

small fry guys? those were the all americans and notable 1st round draft picks from those years.

Best hitter I've seen - Todd Walker
Best fielder - Andy Sheets but Austin Nola is really good too
Best pound for pound player - Mike Fontenot
Best 4 year career - Eddie Furniss
Best 1 year career - Brandon Larson
Best Pitcher - Ben McDonald

. I bet you'd have a hard time finding more than 7 pitchers on your list with 30 MLB wins,

paul wilson
kris bneson
RA dickey
Zito
Mulder
danny graves
kip wells
mark redman
jeff weaver
braden looper
ben sheets

That's 11. With 2 more on the verge below.

then we can throw in Lidge(26 wins), a 2 time all star and WS champ with over 200 career saves

and Billy Koch(29 career wins) with 163 career saves

Eddie Furniss was better at LSU than Todd Walker was.

P: MacDonald

Infielder: Todd Walker

Outfielder: Blake Dean

Honorable Mention: Eddy Furniss, a healthy Warren Morris and Brandon Larsen

If I have to pick a "best player" out of the above list - I take Todd Walker.

Who do I put at the plate with the game on the line?

Eddy Furniss.

Alvin Dark LSU and USL

quote:

Dark attended LSU, in 1942 and was a football standout there as well as a baseball player. During World War II, he transferred through the V-12 program to the University of Louisiana-Lafayette (then Southwestern Louisiana Institute) in Lafayette, Louisiana, where he again showed his baseball skills, batting .461 in 1944. His football skills were evident there as well as he quarterbacked SLI to an undefeated season in 1943 and a New Year's Day victory in the Oil Bowl. This led to his getting drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1945 NFL Draft. After serving in Asia during the war, however, he came home and chose baseball.

Depends on your definition of "best".
Todd Walker was an a-hole - that is one reason why he was hated and he was a marginal defensive player.
Ben Mc was a pitcher. He was great, but still a pitcher.
Furniss was awesome, but benefited the -5 bats. BTW - since he is a dr. now, I put him ahead of Todd walker.
Brad Hawpe, was pretty amazing.
Russ Johnson was solid defensive player and hitter.
Brandon Larson was drafted ahead of Lance Bertman, well the Astros did pretty damn good with that draft pick.

Roy "Moonie" Winston....hit tons of dingers with wooden bats and was a great catcher....also starting guard on football team and became great player for Minnesota Vikings (number 60).
