Rimington award winner, one of the meanest, nastiest and most complete linemen to ever play for LSU.
Does this attitude translate to this year's linemen? Does his passion and intensity carry over to these guys?
Is he the missing link (coaching wise) to get our line back to above average?

I've given this hours of thought. After careful deliberation I have decided that it can't hurt.

not really.

most complete

yup. one of the headiest and most technically sound, so I really hopes he helps the centers out with that aspect.

Yeah, I consider the coaching additions to be one of the few bright spots on offense this year. I'm waiting patiently this offseason for the season to begin, hoping that the more time the players spend with guys like Wilkerson and Gonzalez, the more complete they'll be in October and November.

My favorite quote to sum up Ben Wilkerson as a player:

"Quite frankly, he's the best we've seen." -Mark Richt on Ben Wilkerson at the center position

I don't know, but I'd still rather have him playing on our OLine. As far as his coaching goes, I think he'll be a good one. Not only was he a great talent at center, but he was also one of the smartest offensive linemen we had when he was here. He was a very good student, and did a great job making the necessary reads to get the line in the right blocking scheme. That gives me more hope about his coaching ability than all of his raw talent does.

That said, it's questionable how much impact he can have as a grad. asst. with others above him in the OL coaching heirarchy who are not very good. It's one thing that has bothered me about the coaching staff on the offensive side. We've got a grad. asst. who we are apparently hoping will do the OL coach's job, while a wide receiver coach and a tight ends coach are apparently being relied upon to fill in the gaps of our OC's incompetence. I don't know which one will be developing the QB and which one will be calling the plays, but I have little confidence that two underlings can take over those duties and produce the results that an actual QB coach and OC should be producing.

pretty sad that our Head Coach was a O-Lineman in College, but the past few years we've been weak at that position.

As for Wilkerson coaching, just because you were a great player doesn't necessarily mean you'll be a great coach. But at this point it wouldn't hurt to try new things. Hopefully we'll see much improvement at that position. Most things I've heard says that could be our breaking point on a good or bad season..

we had a damn good OL in 08. they did seem to come out of the Bama game nicked up and kinda sputtered against Ole Miss and Arky, but they destroyed a GT d -line that's pretty much all in the NFL now.

Stud was the OL coach when we won the NC in 2007 and that line had coverted DL's Hitt and Stewart starting on the right side. He had to know a little something about coaching to mold that unit into one that help produce a NC. So, what's happened to him since then? Has he all of a sudden forgot how to motivate and coach technique? Didn't appear to be the same coach in 2008 and 2009.

As for Wilkerson, great players don't automatically make great coaches. He can have all the physical talent in the world, but can he effectively COMMUNICATE what he knows to the players and have that translate to the field? Nobody knows that yet. We'll see. If anything, maybe he can bring some of that nastiness and teach the Centers how to better make the calls.

If Miles felt that Stud wasn't getting the job done, he should have just canned his arse and hired an experienced veteran OL coach to take over..........

One of my favorite on the 2003 team. I got him to sign one of my NC footballs, and he was super nice in doing so.

To answer your question, I think he will definately be an asset that makes some positive difference on the line, especially with the Center position

It couldn't hurt, but he's a grad asst. The moment we start pinning our hopes of having a good season on a 1st year grad. asst with no coaching experience, is the moment we can all collectively admit defeat.

No, they didn't forget. They all got fat and lazy. Complacency.

This is why it's hard for me to be optimistic about the offense this year. I expect some improvement (It couldn't be any worse than last year) but I don't think it will be enough to get us in SEC title contention.

We got 161 yards rushing in that game, averaging 4.6 yards per carry. We also got 163 yards passing. A 3-0 turnover advantage, plus four failed 4th down conversions by Georgia Tech, contributed to the score in our favor, as we scored 24 of our 38 points on four possessions that started in Georgia Tech territory (drives of 19, 24, 42 and minus 14 yards). We also failed on 3rd and 4th and goal at the 1. In any event, 324 yards total offense and 4.6 yards per rush does not constitute "destroying" anybody.

Wilkerson was a great C, one of the best LSU has ever had. I still remember being at the game against Vanderbilt when he went down. Hell, people were leaving the stands and one of the last plays of the game, he does down...

I don't think many people even noticed it...

I remember being like, "Damn, I hope he isn't hurt too bad"...

Coach Stud doesnt have Paul Alexander on his resume and BW does. He will make a difference. Grad Asst or not he will bring the "meat".

Simple minds seek easy simple answers because of laziness. The OL requires more than that to have a full analysis. That being said, Ben could help add some spice to the mix that will be good for chemistry.
